Report from Wednesday.

TD-3E was upgraded to Tropical Storm Carlos this morning. Looks like it is making landfall on the Mexican coast and will bring them much rain. "Too much rain, over paradise."

Don't forget...you too could meet Stuart Coleman all over town these next few days. Also, the Ellwood Mesa people are having some big press release on Friday. It's super secret but must have to do with meeting the June 30 deadline of $6M and asking for help with the remaining $14M.

In tropical formation news, Blanca is out and Tropical Depression 3-E is in and near Tropical Storm strength. Venga, venga Carlos. Surfline has an interesting *free* hurricane tracking center up right here, which includes swell windows. TD-3E is gusting 30mph and is at about the 98W lattitude line. He is predicted to be blowing 60mph over near 105W in 3 days, still way too East for us.

Mesa and Sands.

The Friends of the Ellwood Coast is having an art sale (100kb .pdf) this weekend to raise money for the Ellwood Mesa. It is at the Marcia Burtt Studio at 517 Laguna St. Reception Friday 5-8pm and the exhibit continues on Saturday and Sunday from 11am-6pm. Go check it out and decorate your walls. 100% of sales go to the purchase of the Ellwood Mesa. If you are an artist, you still have time to contribute your work. Questions: Sean @ 648-7243 or sean@seankirkpatrick.com

No new news on Streisand vs. Adelman case, but Ken has posted a great rant he's received from another angst ridden coastal dweller.

Some be-lated reports from this week. Blanca has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression.

The news on Callwave's Peter Sperling's donation to the Ellwood Mesa. Welcome to Sperling Mesa. I had never heard of Mr. Sperling and so thought I'd see what google had to say about him. Peter bought a $32 Million dollar home in the Bay Area and he is valued at $1.1 Billion and accomplished much. Seems Mr. Sperling isn't all so stuffy as he "was one of the top supporters of a failed ballot proposition to further legalize medical marijuana and lessen criminal penalties for drug possession" in Arizona. He also chipped in $1000 for the no on recall campaign. Regardless of who he is, a big thanks goes out to him for his donation.

Another News Flash: PaulPeter Sperling has given $5 Million to the save Ellwood Campaign. If my math is correct that puts the total at somewhere over $7.3 Million. That exceeds the $6 Million needed by June 30, and well on the way to the $20 Million needed by the end of December.

Blanca has reached winds of 55knts but apparently has one more window of Hurricane status and then she's bust.

An interesting email about an Online Chat at spirtuality.com that will be about surfing and spirituality. The chat will be this Friday, June 20th at noon PDT. It will feature surfers Paul Straunch and Larry Cobb along with spiritual guru Susan Cobb.

Tropical Depression Two-E has turned into Tropical Storm Blanca. Winds at 40mph and it's turning Westward a bit, and a fair chance of intensifying into our first Hurricane of the season.

A pretty good surf movie trailer, but requires some bandwidth: Quicktime or Window Media

Some new reports from our amazingly sunny weekend with a few waves even.

Outfooters, which is Santa Barbara's only good running shoe store, is closing after 25 years. They are having some wicked deals to get rid of their inventory so stop by and get some new sneaks if need be. They are located in La Cumbre Plaza.

Tropical Depression Two-E is just now being tracked SE of Cabo. Looks too weak and too East for turning into a hurricane, but fun to track nevertheless.

The LA times claims that at a median price of $825,000, Santa Barbara has the highest home prices in California. Now get back to work so you can pay your mortgage.

Yet another good Santa Barbara surf evening last night at the Lobero Theatre. First was the Donovan Frankenreiter band, a 4 piece band featuring Donovan on guitar, Dean on drums, David on percussion, and someone on bass. If you go to the high bandwidth version of Donavon's site, you can stream 3 of the band's songs. You can also buy their CD online here. A few of their songs were jewels, while a few still needed some work, but it's a beautiful thing to see 4 folks passionate about their performance in front of a small Santa Barbara crowd.

The movie, Drive Thru Japan, was an absolute riot. Although some of the Nihon-centric humor might be a bit out there for the average surfer, I believe it stands on it's own as a classically put together flick mixing surfing in one of Earth's most culturally interesting places. Featuring Donavon, Machado, Barney and Benji, the highlights were an overhead day on an outer island, and a session that featured Donavon surfing a blow up surfboard into backwash. Having Barney around for the trip only accelerated the hijinks, and Machado and Benji were no strangers to comedy. These guys are some amazing surfers, turning some "mushy-mushy" conditions that most would flounder in, into smackable, floating sections, and the occasional aerial. Drive Thru Japan featured a pretty kicking soundtrack with Paul Oakenfold, St. Germain, and "Sushi Bar", as well as a Karaoke inspired song about Barney and Machado spooning. Not a jaw dropping film featuring sick surfing, but a film that will bust your gut while displaying some good old fashioned surfing for the fun of it.

A couple more new reports from the weekend.

Big Props to Surf Country for the kickin deals and Tommy appearence this Saturday.

Upcoming Events:
Pete has spotted the "Sand-A-Groove Tour" at the Lobero this Wednesday, June 11. "Drive Thru: Japan" will be shown along with a performance by Donavon Frankenreiter's band. No word yet on what time or how much.

Local Interest:
Jessica sends in a NewsPress article that answered her questions about June Gloom. 20 years of fog, no wonder all of the old-timers carry on about how good it was way back when.

Followup:
Some be-lated readings about the Domoic Acid that is working it's way up the food chain. yahoo and daily nexus. According to one reader the recent amount of Sea Lion "chum" is the reason for the rash of shark sightings.

The surf is flat but Doug's Surf Country is going off! This saturday June 7th he is having Tommy Curren in the shop from 12-3. I'm not sure what he is doing there except to get oggled by groms and old timers alike, but I'd check it. Doug is also giving folk 20% off everything but boards and suits. In more insane promos, Doug is having a drawing for a raffle on Friday, 13 June. You can enter online here.

For the rumors category:
1) I've seen a bunch of sea lions washed up on the beach and have heard of dozens of others from other surfers. Today's Independent has an article about it being natural causes from Domoic Acid.
2) A friend of a friend of a friend said that 2 great whites were spotted north of Ellwood this weekend. How, where, when and all of those good facts are a mystery. Rumor or Fact?

New Report from Rincon.

The Jogathon to save Ellwood netted $33k this weekend, or .55% of the $6M needed to buy the bluffs. Cross your fingers for a local philanthropist. This Saturday the Big Dog parade on State St. will help raise more money for Ellwood.

Jalama, Gaviota, and Goleta beaches have warnings on them for Fecal Coliform from Monday's testing.

I've read from one source that there is a surf movie in IV on Thursday night that will have a lot of local footage. I haven't seen any posters around town for it, but if it exists it starts at 8:00 at IV Theatre and should be a good time.

New Report for Sunday in Pismo.

Swell looked good down south yesterday but pope saw Pearl Jam play in Irvine so couldn't make it out. However, the pope manages to have 2 lawn tickets to the show tonight. Free to the first Santa Barbara Surfing reader who emails and comes and gets them in Goleta. Lawn tickets in Irvine are GA and behind all the seats, but the price is right. Rules are if you come get them you must use them and you can't scalp them.
