New report from Tuesday.
Stokemon and others write in to say the showers at Campus are back better then ever. The parking, however, is still no longer free.
Pope is only 30 yet today he had his first Basal Cell Carcinoma cut out of his back. So if you are enjoying this warm water make sure you use some sunscreen and rashguards to protect yourself. You may want to keep an eye on some of your strange skin things too, and go to a dermatologist to see what he or she thinks. Lesson learned is that my HMO Dr. guy told me it was nothing and sent me on my way, but when I went to a dermatalogist he thought it was suspect right away, and had it analyzed. Dermatalogist recommendation: Dr. Leposavic.

New Report from a Tropical Saturday.
My hyping up of tropical events backfired again. Felicia was downgraded to Tropical Depression on Saturday. However, there is something else down there that has begun brewing so keep and eye out. The next tropical system that gets named will be bestowed with the name Guillermo. Since tropical system names get recycled after the 6th year, the last Guillermo was in 1997. Tim did a nice job of documenting his experience with Guillermo, starting with a Guillermo Photo Gallery which is a few photos from his Aug 7, 1997 session.
Stokemon writes in to tell us the showers and drinking fountain at Campus Point have been turned off "until further notice" He's a little worried the UC is not going to bring them back on line, so if you know any info about the shower situation, write in. Stokemon notes that this, on top of the end to free parking on weekends and before 8:00/after 5:00, is a disturbing trend in UC actions.
My good Pismo surf buddy, Bill, is out of the water for at least 8 weeks when he perforated his ear drum a few weeks ago when his Stewert clocked him on the side of the head. If you have any personal stories about your road to recovery with a blown drum, or any advice on how to handle it, lemme know.

An evening run near Leadbetter on Tuesday showed some surprisingly good sized waves and a lot of folks out there enjoying them. Should have packed the stick and not the shoes. A lunchtime run on Thursday to Coal Oil showed 0 people out at Deveraux with 3"-6" waves, and 11 people out at Sands in 6"-12" waves.
Our 6th Tropical Depression has formed off the coast of Manzanillo, Mexico. It is looking nice and compact and full of potential. If upgraded she would be Felicia. Could this be our first Hurricane of the season? Earlier this week points south were receiving energy from Tropical Strom Enrique, and I believe some of the crazy weather a few days ago, including some rain in LA, could have been some tropical leftovers. Texas just took Class 1 Hurricane Claudette on the chin and now Tropical Storm Danny-boy is warming up in the gulf.
This picture of a dolphin in a wave is making it's way around the internet by the droves. It is a dolphin, not a shark.

Slow on the updates. Tropical Depression 5 became Tropical Storm Enrique for a few days and then dissipated. Two disturbances down there now, neither of which have organized into a depression yet.
Surf report from this Saturday. Also a belated and one from the 4th of July.

Tropical Storm Dolores is 765 miles SW of Cabo, heading West, blowing 35knts, and expected to peak at 45knts in 24 hours. The first storm after Andres to make it beyond the Cabo shadow, yet she appears to be heading too Westerly, and to be too weak. In the meantime the 4th of July weekend has brought plenty of fun Windswell to our little shadowed corner which will be reported here on Monday.

Steve has discovered a Campus Point Cam.
Bob Sturm, who has worked at CDIP before working at UCSB, has produced a pretty epic CD from CDIP bouy data. The CD, "Music From the Ocean", is available on Bob's site and there are many .mp3 excerpts to listen to also. An excerpt from the back of the CD:
"The Pacific Ocean is an immensely complex environment that has enourmous impact on the entire planet Earth. Tides are predictable for the next 10,000 years, but the interactions of the ocean and atmosphere make week-long predictions of ocean conditions difficult at best. Winds grip the ocean surface creating wave-trains hundreds of kilometers long, which often travel thousands of kilometers to finally break, releasing the embodied solar energy on some distant shore. Deep water ocean buoys record these wave energies and make predicting coastal conditions easier. This data is extremely important to coastal engineers, mariners, military, scientists, commercial fishing, and surfers.
This CD is a demonstration and exploration of turning this data into sound and music. Listening to the ocean creates a new way of understanding it. Energy coming from storms thousands of kilometers away, local wind swells occurring in the afternoons, and seasonal and regional differences along the West coast of the USA, can be heard in the sonifications of the data. Composing for the ocean is also explored by using the buoy as performer and ocean as conductor. The results can be delicate wisps to massive jolts depending on the location of the buoy and time of year. "
