Santa Barbara Surfing will be helping connect the "Shark Research Committee" with surfers who have had shark sightings.
"The Shark Research Committee is requesting the assistance of the surfing community in establishing a network of volunteers willing to report encounters, observed predatory events, and sightings of White Sharks (Carcharodon carcharias). In time this information will help provide insights into White Shark behavior and migratory patterns and geographic areas of preference based on time of year and oceanographic and environmental factors. If you would like to participate in one or more of these projects the online Reporting Forms are available at the Shark Research Committe. These reports will be made available to the surfing community online. It might be advantageous to know before venturing out to your favorite surfing location (if) a White Shark had recently been observed in the area. Check Santa Barbara Surfing or the Pacific Coast Shark News page for regional updates. It is not the objective or goal of this research to frighten anyone from using our coastal waters, but rather to inform them of recent events that might pose a potential threat. Your participation in these projects is greatly appreciated.
