The backcountry has gotten almost an inch of rain already but will this storm live up to the media hype? More hype is the 24hr and 36hr buoys offshore showing 30ft wave heights.

A good time was had by all on Saturday night for the premier of "Country Surf" along with September Sessions and a set by Tom Curren. Being as it was at the Junior High School, groms outnumbered the crowd by a good margin, but it still managed to attract quite a few old timers as well. Curren played first, a half hour set of acoustic tunes along with his shy, humble and awkward stage presence. You can certainly say that Curren is no attention seeker. His music and lyrics were great but the sound system had some major problems, mainly in that his finger work sounded superb but his strumming sounded like I was listening thru a drainage pipe. Following Tommy's set was a film shot in the 70's on super8 by Jay Allen. You may reconize Jay from his time as DJ for a Jazz show on KCSB for awhile. Jay's footage was a rare glimpse into the surfing world in Santa Barbara County during the 1970's. Jay didn't mention any spots or any surfers but it was non-stop 70's singlefinning at it's best. The soundtrack was non-stop as were the clips, especially this one mysto left that had a fast pipeline-esque takeoff before fading. A good compilation of Jay's closet-full of video and well worth checking out. It can kind of drag on at the end, it depends how much coffee you've had. The night also had a lot of raffles and September Sessions, all this for a bunch of good causes.
