Deja Vu: The County Board of Supervisors will hear the IV Parking issue again this Tuesday, June 1 at 2:00. Conviently right after a major holiday, it's at the same time and same place as last time.

The Board of Supervisors voted last night to delay the decision on the IV Parking Plan until June 1 . The meeting was very well attended, by both those in favor and those against the plan. The opposition got to speak first, and those 30 people spoke until about 5:15pm. After that the proponents got to speak, but I was out the door by then. From what I heard of the opponents, there were some very good issues; coastal access, cost of the permit, hardships on families, difficult for low income people, the list goes on. One of the most interesting things I learned about was the proposed way of enforcing the permits. Meter Maids would drive around in little cars with tons of cameras on top. These cameras would capture images of license plates, do some quick pattern recognition, and then display if they had a permit or not. These cars would also be equipped with GPS. I'm not sure if this violates privacy laws, with government officials roaming IV scanning plates and placing them at a time and location. Seems creepy.

Moving on to surfing, there were a lot of surfers there to say they don't want to lose Deveraux. I think the board members got the point. Sadly it appeared it pivoted the surfers against the environmental activists. Frankly, I'd rather enjoy surfing in the great outdoors then sit in meetings holding up environmentalists signs.

Sitting in the meeting, I couldn't help but feel like a pawn in the Surfrider Foundations plans. Surfrider had been involved with the planning process with the county from very early on. Surfrider proposed a plan to the planning process which was more or less accepted. Later on, however, Surfrider decided it wasn't good enough, and then rallied common-folk like you and I to help overturn the plan. I don't feel too pawnish though, there are just way too many things that haven't been thought out in the plan, and I am quite pleased that my first voyage into a board meeting turned out so well.

This Saturday, the 15th of May at 8:00 is what sounds like a great local surf film at IV Theatre called VINYL(35kb .pdf). The film is by Dave Erickson and Alex Messina of UCSB Film Studies and the UCSB Surf Team. From Dave: "It is called VINYL and uses classic rock to create a old school feel. It is 40 minutes long and a band in the film called Tripdavon will be playing at 8 with the video playing at 8: 45. It is filmed all around SB as well as contest footage of Trestles, Blacks, C street, and Huntington." Only $3 for students and $5 for the rest of us, and it benefits the UCSB Surf Team.

SAVE THE DATE: May 18 @ 2:30pm: Final chance to give comments on IV Parking Plan. Get amped on IV Parking by checking out some recent local longboard footage by Callie Bowdish at Deveraux.

Super Duper Update: It appears the time to show up next Tuesday is 2:30pm. Check it out, your email comments to Gail are working.

UPDATE from surfrider: "We were misinformed from a junior staff member at the Clerk of the Board office about how to get your comments to the Board of Supervisors via email. The County does not have an official way to get emailed comments to the Board of Supervisors. (However) Do to your great response the Clerk of the Board was overwhelmed and contacted Surfrider to inform us that they are working on a system to accept electronic public comment. Until that time, they suggested that we send our email comments directly to the supervisors, especially Gail Marshall (since this issue is in her district)"

Thus, these are the two most important address's to send your comments to:

sbcob@co.santa-barbara.ca.us
gmarsh@co.santa-barbara.ca.us

This site has always taken a mostly neautral role in local issues, letting the reader decide how they feel about beach access, coastal development and etc. With that in mind, however, I'd like to point out that we have less than two weeks until the Board of Supervisors votes on the IV Parking Plan on Tuesday May 18th. Untill then the Surfrider Foundaton is suggesting mass vocalness to our leaders.

If you oppose this IV Parking Plan, go ahead and write a quick note to your supervisor (or all of them). Even one line saying you oppose it for blah blah will get noted and effect the outcome.

1st District: Naomi Schwartz
2nd District: Susan Rose
3rd District: Gail Marshall
4th District: Joni Gray
5th District: Joseph Centeno

Update: With just Two clicks you can send a letter via Surfrider right Here.

What you have to remember is there are many trustafarian activist wackos in this town that don't have jobs and thus have a lot of time to sway the county to follow their skewed worldview. It's going to take a lot of letters from hard working surfers like us who usually mind our own business to offset those wackos.
