Santa Barbara Surfing will be helping connect the "Shark Research Committee" with surfers who have had shark sightings.
"The Shark Research Committee is requesting the assistance of the surfing community in establishing a network of volunteers willing to report encounters, observed predatory events, and sightings of White Sharks (Carcharodon carcharias). In time this information will help provide insights into White Shark behavior and migratory patterns and geographic areas of preference based on time of year and oceanographic and environmental factors. If you would like to participate in one or more of these projects the online Reporting Forms are available at the Shark Research Committe. These reports will be made available to the surfing community online. It might be advantageous to know before venturing out to your favorite surfing location (if) a White Shark had recently been observed in the area. Check Santa Barbara Surfing or the Pacific Coast Shark News page for regional updates. It is not the objective or goal of this research to frighten anyone from using our coastal waters, but rather to inform them of recent events that might pose a potential threat. Your participation in these projects is greatly appreciated.

Those of you who work
in city planning or follow this site may remember a sb surfer named justin who moved to san diego county planning. He managed to plan a costa rica trip just at the arrival of this long awaited south swell and was caught on camera at RoverCam on Sunday and Monday. Stay tuned for more pics in the days to come.
Fall is in the air, and with Santa Ana's coinciding with a south swell we could be kicking off the start of fall with a bang. Local spots of course not quite seeing the south from my search for waves today. Reports coming tommorrow for Friday-Monday sessions.
I was wrong about the State of S Surf Movie, it is this friday, sep 24th. My fact checker was busy watching 60 minutes. Apologies.

New Report from Wednesday.
Ellie is looking for a place to live in the classifieds.
Some surf photos from Hurricane Ivan here, here and here. The captions are pretty sweet: "A surfer wipes out while riding the pipe of a wave."

New Report from Tuesday afternoon.
Santa Barbara native Ian, whose picture from Hurricane Frances was highlighted in this post from follysurf is now even more famous because Surfline used that photo in their Hurricane Frances Wrapup. What's even more classic is the pop-up which states, "Folly Beach dishes up a sand-wich for an unfortunate local."

Correction: Apparently "sprout" in SB has been postponed until Wednesday, September 29th.
A few new reports from the warm weekend.
Ian,
SB native but now transplant to South Carolina via Illinois was caught on camera enjoying some of Hurricane Frances at "Washout." We have Tropical Storm Isis and Hurricane Javier in the East Pacific but the East Coast's Cat 5 Hurricane Ivan is looking like a doosey.

Over a week straight of insane heat in Santa Barbara. Even the beach has been no relief from the swelter, as the temps there have been in the 80's and even after dark sleeves are not neccesary.
Hurricane Howard delivered waves a day later then predicted. Saturday was a frustrating day of no waves, but Sunday and Monaday delivered waves even to Santa Barbara proper. Reports from Saturday, Sunday and Monday, or read them all.
SPROUT
Sprout is a Moonshine Conspiracy movie shot on 16mm by Thomas Campbell which is reviewed here. You have 2 chances to watch it in the near future. The first is Thursday, Sep. 16 at the Arlington Theatre. Show is at 8:00 but no word on cost or opening band, if any. The 2nd is Saturday, Sep. 18 in Ventura. It's at the Ventura College Auditorium (46667 Telegraph Rd.), doors open at 7:00pm and The Phantom Riders will open up. $10 for adults, $3 for kids, and this is to support the Ventura County Surfrider Foundation. Edit: Arlington show is now scheduled for Sep 29 at 8pm.
Also, don't forget that "State of S" is showing at the SB Maritime Museum on Friday September 24th at 6:00 and 8:00 with Chris Mueller performing in between shows. $10 and more details here.
Check out Oscar's Murcia Surf, a Spanish website all about surfing in the Mediterranean region of Spain called Murcia. A poor, yet humorous, translation of the page can be obtained here.
The Lompoc Record has news about an exhibit about early Ranchos and Mexican Land Grants in the area. This is a real good oportunity to learn about the area's early land ownership roots, such as the Rancho Nuestra Senora del Refugio The exhibit is at the Lompoc Museum and hours run about 1-4 and costs $1. Check the story for details.

Craigslist just added Santa Barbara as a location. Craiglist is a locally oriented and free add posting service. Let pope know if you post any surf related adds up, and he'll link from SBS.
Some pictures from Hurricane Gaston in Rhode Island. What a loco, loco summer it has been for Hurricanes out there on the East Coast with Frances bearing down on Florida tommorrow night. Sadly, they've been so devesating it seems a little cruel for me to post about the surf conditions out there. That said, New Jersey is apparently going off right now.
Not to be outdone, Howard appears to be the strongest Hurricane of our season right now at Class 3, with 120 knots winds and spinning off of Baja. Forecast sites are screaming about swell arriving over the holiday weekend. Only time will tell, but if something does arrive somewhere within a 100 mile radius of here, be sure to get some pictures.
