USS Ronald Reagan

Wednesday, August 10, 2005

Perhaps the arrival of the USS Ronald Reagan on the shores of Santa Barbara next week is too political of a topic to touch on for a surfing site, but as you may have heard there is a bit of a row in the city. The Santa Barbara Navy League, which sponsors incoming Navy vessels, is facing a $30,000 tax to bring the sailors into town, and bring the townsfolk onto the ship. They are asking the City Council to waive this fee in the spirit of supporting our military personnel when the ship comes to port. Perhaps you feel the same, or perhaps you disagree. If you do feel strongly about it in one way or another, a quick email to the councilmembers would be a good way to start:

MBlum@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
RHorton@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
IFalcone@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
DSecord@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
BBarnwell@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
HSchneider@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
DasWilliams@SantaBarbaraCA.gov

With that out of the way, you can check out the event list for the visit or the unclassified version here. This stop here in Santa Barbara is to be the only one before deployment to theatre. If your tuxedo (and corresponding fat wallet) is at the cleaners right now, perhaps the best way to enjoy the festivities is the no host bar at the yacht club on Friday the 19th. If any new events come up which are easier on the pocket book, they'll be posted here.
