The Horseshoe Trip: A Baja approach to a rare summer of 2005 South Swell. Two solid surfing days followed up by progressively smaller sessions. Cold water, constant windblown sand and water, overhead and pitching out, surf starved SoCal surfers rambling the dirt roads. It's all wrapped up in the Surf Reports.

In good waves Bobby Martinez made it to the Quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro in Hosseger and has a few photos up from his heats today. Once again he's the only American amongst Aussie's and Brazilians, and he is in heat #1 which starts around 1am our time.

Some years ago Santa Barbara Surfing once carried a story written by Bob Campi called "Surfing the War Zone." about surfing in the Gaza Strip. Here is a Boston Globe story about a surfer in the Gaza Strip who wants to avoid politics and just surf during the Israeli pullout this week.

Bobby Martinez lost in the round of 48 in Anglet France, but still got enough points to move up to 6th place overall in the WQS ratings. Curren made it into the Quarterfinals where he lost to WQS ratings leader Adriano de Souza. Curren is currently in 59th place overall. The next event is the Lacanau Pro also in France which goes on this week.

Awhile ago we posted that the independent had an article about Jason Feist and J7 surfboards. Now you can read the article on the J7 site.

Perhaps the arrival of the USS Ronald Reagan
on the shores of Santa Barbara next week is too political of a topic to touch on for a surfing site, but as you may have heard there is a bit of a row in the city. The Santa Barbara Navy League, which sponsors incoming Navy vessels, is facing a $30,000 tax to bring the sailors into town, and bring the townsfolk onto the ship. They are asking the City Council to waive this fee in the spirit of supporting our military personnel when the ship comes to port. Perhaps you feel the same, or perhaps you disagree. If you do feel strongly about it in one way or another, a quick email to the councilmembers would be a good way to start:
MBlum@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
RHorton@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
IFalcone@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
DSecord@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
BBarnwell@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
HSchneider@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
DasWilliams@SantaBarbaraCA.gov
With that out of the way, you can check out the event list for the visit or the unclassified version here. This stop here in Santa Barbara is to be the only one before deployment to theatre. If your tuxedo (and corresponding fat wallet) is at the cleaners right now, perhaps the best way to enjoy the festivities is the no host bar at the yacht club on Friday the 19th. If any new events come up which are easier on the pocket book, they'll be posted here.

Our main man Bobby Martinez lost in the quarterfinals to Danilo Costa who was the eventual winner of the Tahara Pro. Bobby picked up 1525 points however, launching him to 7th place on the WQS tour, now the top American in the WQS. This also seemingly would get him into the WCT next year if he keeps this pace. Next up for Bobby is the O'Neill Pro in France where he as a by all the way to the round of 48.

SBS is certainly covering a lot more about contests and movies as the waves have flattened. Following our guy Bobby Martinez in Japan where he has continued to pile on the victories and has now made it into the quarter finals. He is the only American in a sea of Aussies and Brazilians in this six star event that is sure to boost his overall placing.

The Bruce Movie Review
The Bruce Movie premiered at the Riviera Theatre in Santa Barbara last night, it's 4th stop on the West Coast Tour. It opened to 7,000 people at Volcom's Headquarters in Costa Mesa, then went to SLO, Santa Cruz, and Santa Barbara before going to San Diego.
Showing up at the normally sleepy
The Bruce Movie premiered at the Riviera Theatre you were greeted by Volcom's giant black bus, and hundreds of posters and stickers plastered everywhere. They were throwing out schwag left and right, and foam hat guys were everywhere. A lot of Carp and Pierpont kids making the trek up from points south, and I didn't see the usual SB surf flick suspects.
This being my first Veeco Productions movie, and only the 2nd surfer specific movie (the 1st being Laird), I had few expectations. Except for the fact it was going to be freaking awesome because every magazine has been talking about the Bruce Movie for months now. The surfing footage was good, but not mind blowing. I left with a lot more respect for Bruce's surfing, he is such a well rounded and fluid surfer, with thought out powerful turns, clean lines and his tube riding is some of the most "sixth sense" I've ever witnessed. It is like the tube is magnetized and he is a chunk of iron ore that just gets locked into the perfect spot and then spit out when the field collapses. The waves he was going for at Backdoor were impossible, and he made it out of many of them.
The movie is semi-chronological following some key WCT heats last year, such as the finals in France with his brother, and his last minute re-qualification at the Pipe Masters. It also covers his mind blowing win at the Eddie in December of 2004. This footage is pretty week, almost every other footage of this event shows the size of the waves and skill of the riders but this footage seems ho-hum. Even the footage of Bruce's insane tube going left in the shorebreak doesn't do it justice. Allthewhile making me wonder, "why did this movie take so long to make?"
If you've read a surf magazine in the last few months you've been exposed to "The Making of the Bruce Movie" which pumped it up as a huge work in progress. Photos of them interviewing Bruce have been splashed everywhere, and yet as you watch the movie you realize the interviews are the most slapped together thing about the movie. Maybe that is Volcom's way of doing movies, but having Bruce interviewed while he's driving, or while he's walking, pretty much no interviews where they sat him down, makes you wonder if Bruce was that big on his big movie being made. The interviews with friends and family are at least stationary, but not too enlightening.
As hard as the producers tried with annoying interview angles and a dissonant soundtrack, they could not take away from Bruce's surfing. Weather he is making it into and out of impossible Pipe waves, or landing aerial after aerial on a boat trip, or making powerful turns in a contest you realize this is one of the most well rounded surfers today, and a nice guy to boot. You perhaps think he is too much of a free spirit and too well rounded to ever take home a World Title, but time will tell on that one.
The movie is worth watching, but just make sure you tell those surf magazine marketing machines to stop pumping up movies that pay them the most return.

With 400,000 people in town this weekend for Fiesta it may be a good idea to check out the Bruce Movie tonight at the Riveria.
At the 6 star WQS event in Japan, Bobby Martinez has made it it into the round of 24, but Tommy lost to a pair of Aussies in the round of 48. Besides Bobby's February victory in Brazil, this is his best performance and should bump him up the ladder from his current 14th place in the overall standings.

In lieu of waves we have surf movies this week.
The first is the much
anticipated "The Bruce Movie" from Volcom which is all about Bruce Irons. Some research has revealed that it will play at the Riveria Theatre on Thursday, August 4th at 7:30pm. Volcom rented the whole theatre out so admission is free.
The second movie is "State of S" which is playing in town again on Saturday, August 6th at 7:30pm at the Marjorie Luke Theatre at SBJHS.
Local Aerial Artist Bobby Morris won his first two heats last weekend at the US Open of Surfing. It looks like mastering Goletas beachbreaks helped him out in the small Huntington conditions. Dane Reynolds defeated Bobby in his 3rd heat and then went on to defeat the other Bobby, Bobby Martinez in the round of 48. Dane lost to none other than Andy Irons (the event winner) two rounds later, in the same round Tim Curran made it to. Hats off to the local kids.
