2004 World Champ Andy Irons just won the Quicksilver Pro in France, putting the race on between him and Kelly Slater for the 2005 Championships. Ventura boy Dane Reynolds had an excellent performance in the event, beating Fred Patacchia in round 2 and CJ Hobgood in round 3 before losing to Victor Ribas in round 4 today. Our friends at Vandenberg successfully launched a Minotaur rocket carrying a DARPA payload named of "Streak" at 7:24 last night and this was the view from the Riveria.

Our locals pro surfers are still at it. Venturan Dane Reynolds earned a wildcard into the WCT event Boost Mobile Pro, and wowed spectactors by winning his first heat with a huge air. He then went onto to lose his 2nd heat to a guy named Kelly Slater who won the contest. Meanwhile Bobby Martinez holds onto 4th overall in the WQS. The WQS is finished with high points contests until the end of October. Meanwhile SBS hero Bobby Morris is slated to surf in the Newport OP Pro this week, but results are meager.

Surfrider to Host "National Paddle Out For Clean Water" this Saturday

Surfrider Paddle Out and Healing Circle

Meet on Eastside of STEARNS WHARF

In an effort to bring attention to the ongoing degradation of our coasts and oceans, the Surfrider Foundation will be holding its 2nd annual National Paddle For Clean Water. This event will raise awareness of the two recently published Ocean Commission Reports which state that the oceans and coasts in the world are threatened by pollution of various sources and environmentally destructive development.

It is up to us to do our part and raise awareness about these important issues to friends, neighbors and decision makers. The Paddle Out is just one statement to the community that WE DO CARE!!

Be a part of this exciting event to show your support in solidarity of clean water! Special address by Assembly Member Pedro Nava. Bring your surfboard, canoe, kayak, outrigger, anything that floats....to create critical mass for clean water!

Beach celebration to follow. Sponsors include Mr Zoggs Sex wax, Powell-Peralta, Clif Bars, Blue Edge Magazine and New Belgium Brewing Co.

A return of the winter crew that strangely didn't show on Thursday, people talking about their new guns for the winter and reminiscing about last year. Waves were very sporadic. Should have been there yesterday.

Today is the 10th Anniversary of Tim Maddux's Santa Barbara Surfing. Tim was actually posting surf reports on usenet much before that, but the report of September 15th, 1995 is the oldest one archived on this site. You can view it in Tim's orginial form here, and it's also been imported into the new scheme here.

For those new to this site since 2002, Tim orginally started this site on the UCSB Engineering servers, where it was well known for gathering weather and bouy data before the slew of sites out there, and providing very detailed first person post session surf reports. Tim finished up his PhD in 2002, handed the site off to pope, and headed out to Woods Hole and then onto Oregon State University where he is currently a Faculty Research Associate in Ocean Engineering. You can still find Tim posting on alt.surfing and surfing in Oregon.

In the days to come we will be highlighting Tim's classic 10 year old surf sessions. Happy 10 years Tim.

Some much belated surf reports from Labor Day weekend at Rincon: Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Also some surfing con-family on this last Saturday and Sunday.

Doug gives us the heads up on StormSurf rallying people to defeat Senate Bill 786 which would only give buoy and weather data to private companies for re-sale to the public. The bill is here, and you can email Boxer and Feinstein your views too, it appears Boxer is against the bill but no word on Dianne. StormSurf also links (and discloses the bias) of a Slate article here.

KCLU is carrying a story this morning that the car break in rings so popular at San Diego and LA surf spots have now come up to Santa Barbara. Apparently break ins are being reported at the Rincon parking lot as well as local hiking trailheads. The deal is that one theif watches where you put your key, then when you go surfing, one watches to make sure you are out of sight while your car is raided for treasure. So use that key pocket in your wetsuit and keep an eye out for people strolling the lots. (Update: VC Star has an article and it appears thus far to be a Ventura County thing, not Rincon proper but the Rincon Parkway to the South.)

Labor Day Weekend

Friday, September 02, 2005

An Oxnard session last weekend during a south swell, followed by Tuesday and Wednesday sessions from some of our best windswell in months. Waist high waves in town, and even enough for El Rincon to break was much needed around these parts.

The local(ish) pro update:

Bobby Martinez lost in the Quarterfinals in Hosseger but managed to get enough points to be in 5th place overall in the WQS. He's in Portugal now and won his first heat and has his 2nd heat in the round of 48 tommorrow. The top 4 in the WQS have either opted to not surf this contest or are already knocked out so Bobby has certainly boosted himself to #4, but would have to make the quarterfinals to launch into 3rd place overall.

Dean Reynolds got a wildcard draw into the WCT Quiksilver Pro Japan, where he came in 2nd in round 1 and is surfing against Luke Egan in round 2 tommorrow.

Surfline has a writeup about our much needed south swell a few weeks ago. Surfing has certainly been abused my marketers to sell just about everything these days, but Royal Caribbean Cruises has taken it to mind boggling porportions. For optimum amusement, one must click on the circles over peoples heads to really gain an understanding of surfing.
