Delta IV Vandenberg Launch

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Our good friends up at Vandenberg AFB will launch the first Delta IV rocket from the West Coast tonight at 8:14pm. The classified NRO payload will launch from SLC-6, the base's Southernmost launch pad near Pt. Arguello. This rocket should be a pretty big boy, and the launch is close enough to sunset to be a spectacular sight. Note that a few North County beaches will be closed up to and during the launch. Check on the launch status at spaceflightnow and a live webcast at Boeing.

Rincon Shark
Seeing as how this was sent in by a reliable reader, and doesn't coincide with a big swell, we tend to think it might be true. This is not an attempt to be fear mongers:

TRUE STORY. a friend of mine, Matt, home from college in Berkeley, was scared out of the water at Rincon by what he claims to be a 15 foot Great White about two weeks ago while surfing Indicator by himself. He said the dorsal fin was big and angular, and when a small wind wave lifted the shark and backlit it, he could see the entire outline of its top half and it was indeed a white shark. Needless to say he paddled hard for the beach and there was no incident.
