FCS Replacement Screws
We were frustrated with our stripping FCS replacement screws and couldn't find any info online about the specs or how to purchase them so we wrote something, the FCS Replacement Screw Review.
Classifieds
Doug has two more boards for sale in the classifieds, this time two Becker longboards for $625 each.
Jeff is selling his 1999 GMC Denali for a Santa Barbara Surfing special price of $15,000.
Bobby Morris at Trestles Surf Bout
Bobby surfed in Heat #2 of Round 6 today at 11:15am against Anthony Petruso, Dustin Cuizon, and Austin Ware in four foot clean conditions. Rob Machado was announcing the heat online and said, "Bobby Morris.... hmm never heard of Bobby Morris, but he is ripping." We are wondering why Bobby is not on his yellow board, but off the bat Bobby got a 7.00 for 2nd place and then his 2nd wave he got an underscored (as Machado described it) 4.77 to keep in 2nd place. He fell into 3rd place and neither of his next 2 waves improved his score. Then on his 5th wave he threw some crazy tail for a 6.43 to eake himself into 1st place with 6 minutes left. With one minute left Bobby got knocked back into 3rd after Dustin and Austin were given scores in the 8's. It appeared Bobby was surfing the most advanced but his wave selection had some troubles towards end. Good show anyway for the lad.
Bobby Martinez at Bells Beach
Bobby Martinez lost to Andy Irons in Round 4 of the Bells Beach WCT contest. It was a cruddy heat where the waves just dissapeared. Both surfers got some mediocre rides but the judges thought Andy's were better by a combined 2 points. Andy went on to lose against Occy in the Quarterfinals. As one reader noted, the only WCT heats Bobby has lost are to once and current world champions. Bobby is now ranked #4 in the world, behind Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow, and Joel Parkinson. Andy Irons is in 5th. Here's to hoping that Bobby's #4 seeding will keep him from drawing a heavyweight until the Quarterfinals, unlike the bogus draw against Irons in Round 4 this time.

The Body Glove SurfBout down at Trestles has a lot of our local kids doing well. Right now SBS hero Bobby Morris of Goleta just surfed in Round 5. Instead of a yellow board he wore a yellow jersey and he was pulling off multiple tail-throwing lip hits to place 2nd and advance to Round 6.

UCSB Geogrpahy graduate student Tony Marca is researching Surf Travel and is looking for surfers to take a survey on their surf travel habits. The first of it's kind study is being undertaken by a team of Geography Department researchers and should take 10-15 minutes. Fill it out while you can and expect to see it published someday down the line. No confidental information is recorded and you must be over 18 years of age to take the survey. The link to the survey is available by clicking here or below.

The April issue of Blue Edge is out and is a very respectable issue dedicated to women in surfing. Features on local surfing and other outdoor sports women follow Mary Carmel Osborne, Kim Mearig, Lori Rafferty, Amy Bigelow, Sharon Green, Sue Peterson, Shawn Alladio, and others.
Another female
profiled is Leeann Curren, the daughter of our hero Tommy Curren. Leeann was visiting from her home in France to surf in Santa Barbara with Pa and Uncle during that warm spell we had in February. Pope didn't know it at the time, but the impressive pink-suited girl he got shots of near the SB Harbor was indeed yet another Curren to add to your list of surfers to keep an eye out for.

Bobby Martinez won his heat against Marcelo Nunez in a 14.50 to 2.60 blowout to advance to Round Four against 3 time world champion Andy Irons. In a perhaps mis-informed rant, the Round 4 seeding seems unfair for our hero Bobby. Bobby is ranked #3 on the WCT now after his success in the last contest yet gets seeded against a #5 seed, whereas fellow rookie Pancho Sullivan who is ranked 9th now takes on Luke Stedman who is ranked #33. Andy is surfing in top form right now so this is going to be as tough as Bobby's heat against Kelly Slater in last months semis. Should be a good show and heres wishing Bobby luck.

Springtime sea gods threw down a surfeit of decent waves to the Queen of the Coast for the 23rd Annual Rincon Classic, held April 8th and 9th, hosted by Santa Barbara’s Surf Happens. With a long history to uphold, the fabled point came alive and brought out great surfers, both the young and the wiser — although one wiser couldn’t help his curmudgeonly ways, “It’s just semi-pro,” he grumbled. “All kids, no old guys.” Read More....

While we await offical results of the 2006 Rincon Classic, we have two updates.
First is this story from a reader's session at Sands on Thursday April 6th:
Yesterday, late morning, when there were only 5 or 6 of us out in the water, this huge whale jumped completely out of the water and splashed back in. It must have been only a few hundred yards away, towards the platform. The waves yesterday weren't great, but that definitely made everybody's session.
Second, is the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History will have the Surfaris in concert on June 2nd. As part of the event, they are having a contest for surf bands. The winning band will open the show on Friday, June 2. The flyer in .pdf format is right here for those who want to participate.

Word comes in that the Rincon Classic is on for Saturday after 4-5 postponements spanning 3 months. Full info below:
After careful consideration we have decided to hold the 2006 Rincon Classic as scheduled as a two day event. Even with daylight savings time, and breaking the first round out into double areas we would be unable to complete the contest in one day. As such I know that some contestants will be unable to attend the event.
On the bright side, the surf is predicted to build all day Saturday and remain strong on Sunday. We are also extending the times for all finals into 20 minute heats. We appreciate your continued cooperation and look forward to having a great event with everyone. The support from the community has been amazing this year, especially with all of the postponements. If you have any questions, or input on how to make the event better please email us at surfhappens@cox.net. Until tomorrow, pray for good surf and weather! If you have the ability to help Friday afternoon we will be setting up scaffolding and tents beginning at 2:00pm-5:00pm. Call Surf Happens if you are interested 451-7568.
