Bobby Martinez Wins 2006 Billabong Pro Tahitti

Saturday, May 13, 2006

Bobby Martinez defeated Danny Fuller in the QuarterFinals and then Taylor Knox in the Semi-Finals at the Billabong Pro in Tahitt today. He then surfed in the finals against Fred Patacchia of Hawaii. The heat was slow at first with poor waves but things heated up soon enough with some great battles. Bobby got the upper hand to win the heat, but both surfers showed great sportsmanship.

Congrats to an incredible performance by our Santa Barbara local.

Bobby vs. Another World Champ

Bobby won his Round 4 heat against CJ hobgood
Bobby's first wave was a huge and deep barrel for a 9.83 score for the 2nd highest wave score of the contest. Bobby was so impossibly deep it was just a sea of foam and there was no way he would make it out, but somehow he climbed out at the end. That amazing wave was followed by two more great waves, one of which was a 9.17 to give Bobby a 19.0 heat score, the 2nd highest in the contest. CJ was hard at work too but only had a 15.0 heat score to show for it. They then traded a few more waves, Bobby with another great wave but not higher than his previous scores, and CJ with a nice monster for a 9.60 to put him within 1 point of Bobby with 7 minutes left. CJ fails to get the 9.41 that he needed and Bobby advances to the quarterfinals.

Darryl writes in with some Bobby Math
With Parko, Taj and Andy losing out, Bobby could take over second place in the ratings with an equal 3rd or better placing (and finishes above Taylor Knox). IF he is to lose to CJ, then the statement about him only being beat by World Champs still stands true.

Bobby Martinez vs. Jarrad Howse Round 3 Wrap-up
Right off the bat Bobby takes off deep and completely disapears and then at the end he pops thru the sheet for a score of 7.67. His 2nd wave was another barrel off the bat that didn't seem as deep nor long but gave him a better score of 8.33. At this point with 23 minutes left he has 16.0 points to his opponent has 0.0. They trade waves now and Jared gets a 7.33 and Bobby takes a crazy late air drop takeoff that he makes but then gets swallowed by the tube for a 2.17. 10 minutes go by without a wave and then Bobby gets a nice long mid sized tube for a 6.00 but then then that was followed by a bigger, deeper tube by Jarad for a 7.60 to have Bobby leading the heat by only 1.07. Bobby's next wave with 7 minutes left was bigger with another deep takeoff for an 8.57 to seal the victory. Bobby will face CJ Hobgood or Victor Ribas in Round 4.

More Bobby at Surfing Magazine.
If you’re wondering why rookie Bobby Martinez is already making a bid for one of the best rookie starts in years, you might want to look at his travel partners. Two of the most dialed and hard-working dudes on tour, CJ and Damien Hobgood, are passing on info accumulated after years of trial and error. “See that, right there, Bobby?” says Damien, pointing to Phil MacDonald as he paddled for a set, got stuck at the lip and pitched from the top. “He didn’t paddle hard enough. Even when you think you’re in it, you gotta paddle real hard here. Take control of the wave before the wave takes control of you.” Which is exactly what Bobby did. In the third heat of the day, surfing Teahupo’o only the second time in his life, he found a deep one, pumped and weaved from way back, and came flying out for an 8.67. He then found a west bowl, slotted himself and ripped into a searing roundhouse for a 7.5. Heat over for Bede Durbidge and Pedro Henrique. Dam and Bobby exchanged a few inside jokes, packed their boards and headed back to “Mama’s” house for another game of 500. Watch for these two – along with brother CJ – to inside joke their way to big results here.
