Without a doubt this is the most absolutely warmest water we've ever surfed Santa Barbara in. Trunks and rash gaurds after sunset with some wind and one can still put in a full session. Yesterday, July 28th in Carpinteria the water felt like Mexico. The Stearns Wharf guage is swaying between 67 and 71 degrees, depending on the tide (and the probe's depth).

US Open of Surfing
Bobby Martinez won his Round 5 heat this morning to move on to Round 6 down in HB. Round 6 is down to only 12 surfers in 3 man heats, yet is not considered the quarterfinals because two surfers from each advance. He surfs against Mason Ho (son of Michel Ho) and Roy Powers, both of Hawaii. The only other big names left are Rob Machado, Tim Curran, and Luke Munro.

Bobby Martinez:
Round 5, Heat 1: Placed 1st to advance to Round 6
Round 6, Heat 1: ~8:00 Sunday

Lee Ann Curren:
Women's Pro Junior Finals: 1:45pm Saturday

Steve Lopez Surf Happens

Steve Lopez
Don points out an LA Times article by Steve Lopez about learning to surf from Chris Keets at Surf Happens.

After briefly researching some actual stories, I drove out to Miramar Beach and met a chap named Don Michael. He said he retired to the easy life here a few years ago from Los Angeles, and he kills hours a day making beach rock sculptures that stand until the tide washes them away. I could see myself doing this if the newspaper business goes under, because it might be the only thing I'm qualified for. While talking to Michael, a surfer walked by with his board, dripping from the surf, and he wore the most contented look I've ever seen. (more)

Rich Livsey
Rich Livsey, of East Coast fame, continues to score interviews in his part of the world. This time he talks surf with Rob Machado about, amongst other things, the new rage of stand up paddleboarding:

I’ve been doing it (stand up paddleboard surfing) for like a year, probably. It’s fun. It’s really good exercise. I take that thing down the beach and it’s kind of like the first thing I do. Unless the waves are really good. I just jump on, paddle up the beach and catch a couple of waves. It warms you up, it’s kind of like going for a jog or something. (more)

The water temperature at the Santa Barbara Wharf is averaging about 65 degrees now. The air temperature has obviously been in the 80's for days. The waves are certainly not pumping however.

Santa Barbara Surf Grls
An update from Santa Barbara Surf Grls, the group of ladies bonding together to learn to surf and/or improve their surfing:
We are having a lot of fun and everyone in the group is really nice and friendly and we are getting better at surfing! We would love to find other beginner female surfers out there to join the group too. Here's pics of us, just so you get an idea of what we are up to and what the group is like. I really appreciate the publicity you gave the group last month - we got new members from it!
They even have a hi-tech Myspace page so any ladies looking to surf with like minded ladies go and join the google group or find out when their next surf meetup is.

Fourth of July 'Swell'

Wednesday, July 05, 2006

Fourth of July Swell
OK so it's summer, there weren't really any waves this weekend, but in a sense, there were. The buoys showed nothing, the swell model was a mere two colors, blue, and darker blue. The surfline reports said it was flatter then flat at Rincon. It's pretty obvious that reporter is not to be trusted. As some found out there were rideable waves for all four days of the holiday weekend. Waist high usually, but from Rincon to UCSB there was something to ride with the right tides and times. Water a little chilly, a 45 minute trunking it session was pushing it, but the air was warm enough to make up for it. Good times.

Strap Thang Review
Back in April of 2004 we reviewed the Yakima Strap Thang. Last week if finally broke, but Yakima sent a replacement for free. The updated review is now in the reviews section.

Conner Coffin
D- updates us on one of our local shredsters:
Conner Coffin won the Open Boys Title at the NSSA Nationals at Lowers. He destroyed a head high left at the buzzer to take the win. Just thought I throw out some support for the SB Grom.

The Truck Has Got To Sell
Jeff's GMC Denali is now the for sale for the incredible price of $11,500. Jeff is still willing to throw in the free case of wax for readers of this site. Get on your horse.
