Mercury Lounge Surf Night

Thursday, May 31, 2007

The historic Mercury Lounge in Goleta the Goodland is having a surf night this Saturday, June 2nd which includes a Glas film and the the bands Kelp and Riptide.
This Saturday, June 2nd, relax and get ready for a great evening of surf music and film with long-time Mercury favorites Kelp. Before and after the musci, we are proud to present the new glas film project - FIELD OF VISION.

Kelp plays modern surf music and traditional classics from the heyday of the surf scene. Coming out of the garage above Rincon Point in April, 1996, Kelp has played up and down the California Coast. Like the mix of songs, a mix of traditional spring reverb with modern digital enhancements and stereo amplification gives Kelp a big and thoroughly modern sound. Influences range from the inimitable Dick Dale and Paul Johnson to modern bands such as The Mermen, The Insect Surfers, Brazil 2001 and Savage Republic.

Opening for Kelp will be our own Johnny Morneau's band RIPTIDE - A new Santa Barbara surf band featuring members of RAM-BUNK-SHUSH. These boys are seasoned pros and we cant wait to hear what they've got going on.

Field of Vision: a surf travelogue that follows the glas team riders and other standouts along a dreamlike journey. The film carries you from the tip of the Baja peninsula up the California coast and out to the Hawaiian Islands. Take a look deep into the sights , sounds and thoughts from the journey with detailed attention to dramatic angles, lighting and color themes.

Rincon Surf Blog
Jon at Rincon Surf Blog is declaring out surfing season over but is still putting up photos here and here. We do seem to be in a better place this spring vs. last spring when the water was a cold-red-tide-windy-flat mess for months on end.

Video Sites
The YouTube spinoff explosion keeps hitting the internet with a few more sites putting up surfing related video content.

Christa from England writes in with the site "VideoJug" which contrary to it's name is a site with how to videos for a wide range of topics. Their are a few surfing videos, including "How to Catch a Wave in One Day" and "How To Read Waves" amongst a couple of others in the watersports section.

Will writes in from LX.TV about a video that profiles the Evolution Surfboards shaper and how the process works.

Surf News For May 1, 2007

Tuesday, May 01, 2007

Pope is going to be out of town until May 17, so no until then updates. Some last links beforehand though.

Spring Swell
Was it just because of a less than average winter, or did the series of Spring Swells that just rolled through here over the last few weeks seem like some of the best April waves we've ever had? In particular last week was off the hook, with every day getting a little bit better. Rincon had too many sessions to list that were Wintertime perfect. Mesa breaks had as many great rides as dog's pooing on the beach. Beachbreaks in Goleta looked and felt like miniature Playa Hermosa (and Bobby Morris was there to treat them right.) Allthewhile, the buoys were a little bit sleeper, but if you showed up a the beach between April 11-April 29, you were probably rewarded with some waves.

Rincon Surf Blog
Jon's Rincon Surf Blog has been tracking the crazy waves we had, and has a lot of photos of great days up there. The rundown:

April 11
April 14
April 19
April 24
April 26
April 28

Goleta Surfing
Tom of the Haskels clothing company has some photos up on Goleta Surfing including some photos from this Spring Swell and some photos Yellow Board Bobby.

Jake the Photog
Jacob Säwensten is new in town and he brought his lens. He has some photos from the Rincon Classic sometime ago and if you like any of the photos contact him for some high resolution images.

Shark Conspiracies
It's not just the toppling of 3rd world regimes that is conspiracy fodor, we got an email about SharkConspiracies.net which is "a free monthly podcast dedicated to uncovering the truth behind shark attacks and encounters with people. "

Wetsuit Surfer
Wetsuitsurfer.com is a site to find a good deal on a wetsuit online. Trying one on is a little tougher.
