The NSSA Nationals are going on this weekend and the Coffin brothers have won a few heats already. In 6 "man" heats for the Juniors, Conner Coffin advanced past the 1st and 2nd rounds to make the Quarterfinals where he'll surf against John John Florence and 4 other hungry groms. Conner lost the semi-final heat for Explorer Boys. His brother Parker Coffin surfed in Open Boys and advanced past Round 1 but lost in the Quarterfinals.
If there are other locals we missed, let us know.

A story that happened in Mexico this week is sweeping the online surfing world. The short version is a group of Aussies were trying to surf a break in Mexico that was closed off on short notice for a 5 day "Surfline Goodwill Tour". The Aussies attempted to surf early in the am when the beach and water was empty before the "contest" started. The Aussies were harassed out of the water by guys launching rocks from slingshots, apparently instructed by Surfline founder Sean Collins. You can read all about it in this thread at SurferMag with some photos and videos of the fiasco here.
Sean Collins and Surfline are going to have a hard time getting out of this one.

We're not ones to keep fueling the NewsPress drama that makes for 50% of
this town's news, but Jon over at Rincon Surf Blog emailed us with a heads up to an Independent article about 3 resignations at Blue Edge Magazine that may lead to it's demise. We'd been in contact with Chuck Graham on and off in the life of Santa Barbara Surfing, and he seemed to will Blue Edge along with his labor of love attitude towards the magazine. It seems Blue Edge has been getting better and better, with some consistent photographers, writers, and advertisers. Best of luck to those that left (and stayed) and here's to hoping our town can continue to have a local surf mag from some outlet or another.

The water is getting amazingly warm for this early in the summer, and this weekend brought some waves to town that made for some trunkable sessions for many.
Santa Barbaran Bobby Martinez might be breaking out of his sophomore slump with a Round 3 victory at the WCT Chile contest going on now. He ended up in 17th in his last 3 contests but he's assured at least a 9th in this one as he faces Daniel Wills in Round 4.

This Thursday, June 21st is the 3rd annual International Surfing Day.
Surfrider Foundation SB is having a post-work beach cleanup at Leadbetter from 5:30-7:30pm. Following that will be the International Surf Day Party at Sharkeez. They'll be premiering the surf flick Monument Nation (weird trailer here), raffling surfboards, skateboards, etc. More info on SF's site. No word on if there is a cover at Sharkeez but we're saying doubtful. Also no word on if groms can pull into the bar scene.
Jon Shafer has a report from the Ebb/Flow gallery opening over at Rincon Surf Blog followed by a story on Rincon wahine Demi Boelsterli who most Rincon regulars will undoubtedly recognize.
