Classifieds
You thought the classified section was dead until Eric put his 8'6" Costa Azul up for sale.
Bobby Martinez at JBay
When we last left our hereo, Bobby Martinez had a Round 4 heat against Dean Morrison. He lost that heat but the good news is we over-exaggerated his need to win, as he is still #12 in the world and at this rate will qualify for next years tour. Next WCT contest isn't until September so we have a wait.
Locals at US Open of Surfing
The WQS warriors of local interest went like this: In the trials Cory Arrambide advanced in his first heat with a 2nd place, won his next heat, then placed 2nd in the quarters to advance to the main event. Colin Schildauer placed 2nd in his first heat to advance to the next round but then placed third so didn't make the main event.
In the main event Cory Arrambide lost his first heat with a 3rd place finish. Tyler Anderson placed 2nd (beating out Anthony Petruso) to advance to the next round but then placed 4th in a heat with Sunny Garcia, Damien Fahrenfort and Simao Romao. The contest is still going on, and although the local guys are no longer in it, Venturan Dane Reynolds advanced with two 2nd places to be in the Round of 48.
Laylan Connelly has been following the event with the OC Register. Here is the first article by her from pre-event and there are more in the Beach Blog if you can handle the OC Register's slew of adds.

Call To The Wall
Edhat has a nice writeup about the Santa Barbara Surf Club at the Call To The Wall competitions down in the Malibu area last weekend. What isn't mentioned in that article is one of the stand up paddlers was harrased by a Great White Shark when he was in 3rd place.

Current World #17 Bobby Martinez of Santa Barbara is surfing well at the Billabong Pro at JBay, South Africa.
He won his Round 1 heat to advance straight to Round 3 which he again won by a good margin. The contest has been on hold for the last few days, but when it starts for Round 4, Bobby will surf against Aussie Dean Morrison who shares the 17th overall place with Bobby. Only the top 15 surfers are guaranteed to re-qualify for next year, and with the season half way through, Bobby needs a good showing here.
In other pro surfing news of local interest, The US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach started today. Local surfers Cory Arrambide and Colin Schildhauer are seeded in the trials, and Tyler Anderson and Tom Curren are seeded in the main event. Dane Reynolds of Ventura, ranked #9 on the WQS and likely to qualify for next years WCT tour, is also seeded in the main event.

That smoke you are seeing this afternoon isn't from the Zaca Fire, but a small brush fire on More Mesa, near Mockingbird Lane and Via Roblada. No structures threatened.
