Goleta General Plan

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

We've got to admit, we aren't up to speed on Goleta politics, but we've gotten a few emails from people wanting to spread the word about some changes to the Goleta General Plan that might be detrimental to many surfers. We've posted some info below, an Indy article here, and a comment form (Due October 31st) you can email to the City of Goleta. Read on and decide for yourself if you want to take action:

Corporations and organizations trying to make 77 amendments to the existing General Plan are rallying their supporters to send in their comments. If you want to keep the protections of the existing plan, PLEASE send in your written comments.

* * * NOTE: YOUR COMMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY OCTOBER 31 * * *

You can write just to say that the proposed changes to the General Plan are NOT ACCEPTABLE. Or you can say in a few words why you oppose changes. Here’s a BRIEF SUMMARY OF REASONS PEOPLE ARE OPPOSING MANY OF THE PROPOSED CHANGES:

1. People object to one of the biggest proposed changes, changing the verb “shall” to “should” throughout the plan (contrary to other General Plans). Such changes would turn General Plan policies into mere guidelines, creating uncertainty, wasting taxpayers’ money and slowing decisions.

2. Some people object to the proposed amendments would allow more Regional Big Box stores - more congestion on Hollister and 101

3. Some object to changes that would reduce environmental protections such as reducing buffer for creeks, bluff and butterfly habitats

4. Some object to the changes (33 were proposed by Bacara) that would reduce public access to beaches and promote more luxury condos near the beach.

You can go to Goleta's Website and review all the proposed changes.

October 26, 2007: Week In Review

Friday, October 26, 2007

Last weekend we had most excellent waves, with some ridable ones on Saturday (we surfed PCH) and then some real Winter class waves on Sunday. Pope was suiting up in the Rincon lot on Sunday morning, saw all the 4-guys-packed-in-cranking-metallica-cars continuing to pull up, and headed back up North to surf in town. One quarter the size waves, one hundredth the size crowd.

The waves dropped from Sunday to a low on Tuesday afternoon then started to pick back up again Wednesday night. Monday and Tuesday had sessions at Sands with plenty of waves to go around. A great session on the Fish Thursday at Deveraux. Friday the swell dropped but Sands still provided some fun waves, although the Halloween crowds were already filling IV like a hippie festival. This weekend isn't looking promising for waves.

Orange Waves
Mario has some eerie surf photos from San Diego on Monday when the fires were going crazy down there. Regular SBS reader and sometime session sharer JM has been working 18 hour days for SD County providing mapping support during the fires. He's missed a lot of good sessions and California thanks him.

Bobby Martinez Wins In Mundaka

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

Santa Barbaran Bobby Martinez won the WCT Mundaka contest this weekend, repeating after winning it last year. He did it by beating tour leader Mick Fanning in the Semi's and then Taj Burrow in the Finals. Bobby is now in 6th place overall on the tour. Although he mathematically cannot become the overall tour leader, he does have the chance to pass Andy Irons with a good finish in Brazil which starts October 30th. Photo: ASP.

Bobby Makes Semis

Friday, October 12, 2007

At the ASP contest in Mundaka, Bobby Martinez had the highest scoring single wave of the event in route to beating Philip MacDonald in the Quarterfinals. He advances to Semifinal #1 against overall tour leader Mick Fanning which will be held Saturday or Sunday. Since Kelly Slater (Overall #2) and Taj Burrow (Overall #3) both made Semifinal #2, Mick can't win the WCT title until at least the next contest. Bobby could have a big outcome on all three of those chaps title contentions. As CI team riders, and fellow American contenders vs. Aussies, it will be interesting to see if Bobby will affect Slater's chances of claiming another world title. Photo: ASP.

Bobby Martinez en Espana

Thursday, October 11, 2007

Bobby is doing well at the Billabong Pro in Mundaka, Spain. Since we last left him he earned a rare bye in Round 3 as Trent Munro dropped out. He earned his keep in round 4 today, getting the 3rd highest heat score of the event and easily defeating Brazilian Bernardo Miranda. He advances to the Quarterfinals which will probably be held over the weekend. Bobby is guaranteed no worse than 5th place, which ties his best outcome of the year thus far and likely gets him into the Top 10 overall. Photo: ASP.

The Swell That Wasn't

Monday, October 08, 2007

The season's first NW swell was predicted to come in last week, a pulse landing on Tuesday and keeping things good for the week. Although the waves could be classified as ridable, this swell was certainly a classic early season wiff. Hitting the most outer buoys at 12 feet around 14 seconds, the Harvest Buoy never saw anything more than 7 feet with short periods and steep angled. It was perfect fall weather early in the week, some offshores holding up the knee high waves into picture perfect lips. Later in the week the wind howled but after that stopped the weekend had some decent windswell to ride. Here's a rundown on the last weeks sessions:
California Paddle
Corinne lets us know about some Stand Up Paddlers (SUP)s that are cruising down the California coast with a stop at Sands yesterday. Their goal is to raise awareness for plastic pollution. You can track their position on this map they should be in the county for a few more days.

Rincon Surf Blog

Thursday, October 04, 2007

If you haven't been tracking Jon Shafer's Rincon Surf Blog lately, Jon has been putting up a ton of original content and community information. Currently he has an interview with surfer and shaper Wayne Rich along with some good photos of Wayne and some boards he has shaped. Further along in that post is some new news about the Rincon sewer. The Rincon sewer, which once seemed like a done deal, has now evolved into a beast of an issue getting national press and local angst on both sides. Jon also appears to be trying to find a way to not anger some Rincon surfers while also being the online place to go for Rincon information. From our perspective, Jon has done a great job with his site. The Rincon Surf Blog has tons of great photos of Rincon, profiles Rincon regulars, has kept us informed of any Rincon news, and only rarely has surf-sensitive information that could be judged as not suitable for the online world. All that, and his site has only been up 8 months. Give him another 8 months and we're sure the Rincon Surf Blog will settle into a balance of information and intrigue to keep everyone stoked. Santa Barbara Surf Club MSA Classic Results

Wednesday, October 03, 2007

This info is passed on from the Santa Barbara Surf Club:

September 8 and 9:
Wow! What a weekend! A true milestone for the Santa Barbara Surf Club. No surprises for the end of this email here. This weekend the club sent 38 surfers to the MSA Classic and, in the end, walked away winners. That's right, the overall victor of the 2007 MSA Classic is the Santa Barbara Surf Club. To my knowledge (and anyone who knows otherwise, please correct me), this weekend's first place team finish at the MSA Classic, is the first time the club has finished in the top team slot overall at a coalition of surfing club's event. After taking second at MSA in 2004, 2005, and 2006, I guess the victory was merely a matter of time! Congrats to the whole team and to the club. Of course, winning a contest feels great, but for some reason, winning MSA's contest, after finishing ahead of them at the 2007 Call to the Wall also, feels even sweeter. Perhaps it's due to their last several years of playful insults they have tossed at us (BACKGROUND: For the past three years or so, ever since MSA "got" (i say "stole"), Brett and Cole Robbins from us, they have referred to the SBSC as the "MSA Farm Team", a remark we casually chuckle off, though isn't always nice to see the underdog win? I think so).

Anyway, to the specifics. Saturday saw remarkably fun waves coming thru 1st point Malibu, with a mere 6 surfers enjoying (see link for shots taken by Jon Shafer). 26 of our 38 surfers made it into the second round. These second days heats were held in albeit smaller waves, waist-stomach+ sets, but still fun. In the end, the club sent 18, yes 18 (e-i-g-h-t-t-e-e-n), surfers into the finals. I have no way to know for sure, but i am pretty sure that is a personal best for us. Now for the individual results:

14 and Under Boys:
Shane Milhollin - 2nd place
Tyler Milhollin - 5th place (this is Tyler's second Malibu Final of the Summer)

15-19 Men:
Spencer "(S)Pecker" Hayes - 4th place (this is Spencer's second Malibu Final of the Summer)

15-19 Women:
Chelsea Zaniboni - 4th place (this is Chelsea's second Malibu Final of the Summer)

20-34 Women
Kaley Swift - 2nd place (this is Kaley's second Malibu Final of the Summer)
Lindsey DalPozzo - 6th place (Lindsey surfed incredibly all weekend!)

20-29 Men:
Tyler Mitchell - 6th place (this is Tyler's second Malibu Final of the Summer)

30-39 Men:
Andrew Buck - 1st place
JP Garcia - 4th place
Tommy Dane - 5th place (this is Tommy's second Malibu Final of the Summer)

35+ Women:
Deb Trauntvein - 5th place (this is Deb's second Malibu Final of the Summer)

40-49 Men:
Wayne Rich - 4th place

50-59 Men:
Danny Bralver - 2nd place
Joel Baldwin - 3rd place

60-69 Men:
Michael Haskell - 4th place
Butch Linden - 5th place

70+ Men:
Frayne Higgesan - 5th place (this is Frayne's second Malibu Final of the Summer)

Mystery Heat:
Cody Craig - 4th place

Whew! What a list of finalist. Special congrats to Sarah Slaughter (15-19 Women) and Ashley Harris (15-19 Women) who surfed their first ever contest for the SBSC and surfed very well. Also, thanks to the MSA for their hard work, and everyone who surfed in this contest and helped make club history. You did the club very proud. Next contest we are intending on attending is the Windansea Contest at San Miguel Thanksgiving weekend. Contact me if interested.

October Is Here

Monday, October 01, 2007

No month is more welcome to this Santa Barbara surfer than October. Groundswells on the horizon, weather and water just perfect, one can still surf after work, and the tourists have ebbed. When the early season groundswells do come, they are usually smaller, shorter period and more Northerly than we'd been dreaming about. On top of that the students amongst others hit up the lineups like its a prerequisite course. Still, after a long, warm, tourist filled summer, sharing some early NW groundswells with those same old faces at spots you don't have to drive far to get to is a yearly tradition.

Bobby Martinez in France
Round 3: Heat 11: Neco Padaratz (BRA) 15.67 def. Bobby Martinez (USA) 6.80
We were wrong. Bobby comes in 17th place in the contest but rises from 17th overall to 13th overall. The math is too mind bottling so we'll just say "at this rate" Bobby will re qualify. Bobby surfs again just down the road in Mundaka, Spain tomorrow.
