Surfrider / Wayne Rich Benefit Tonight

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Don't forget about tonight's bustin' at the seams surf evening put on by the folks at Surfrider Foundation. For a mere $10.50 this evening will feature none other than the surf film 'Out There', a live auction to benefit the Wayne Rich Medical Fund, a raffle, giveaways, Pro's in attendance, and a VIP (that means you if you pay an extra $10 and are 21 and over) after party that is sponsored by the folks who brew Fat Tire and some crazy sounding Vodka company.

You have time to eat a good home cooked meal beforehand, this baby doesn't kick off until 8:00pm and looks like it could be the best $10.50 you paid for a surf movie. It's all going down at the Lobero Theatre and you can buy tickets online (for an extra $7) at the Lobero website.

Beach Acess and Environment News

Friday, May 23, 2008

There has been a lot of news lately pertaining to local beach access and environmental issues, which we'll try to condense here.

Bacara and Beach Access
The Bacara and the City of Goleta continue to anger many surfers and beachgoers, including Santa Barbara Surfing. The Bacara has proposed over two dozen changes to the City's General Plan. Included among them is the ability for the Bacara to build 62 timeshares in a sensitive area, to limit beach access hours, and to move the beach access parking lot and trail. You can read the latests Independent and Daily Sound articles for the full story. As a refresher, the Bacara has already moved where beachgoers can park, closed off the old parking area, installed cactus to deter walking on pre-Bacara paths, and generally made going to this low key, non touristy, family friendly beach more of a hassle. Interested parties can check out the Surfrider Foundation for ways to oppose Bacarafest Destiny.

Water Quality
Heal The Bay released their annual water quality report, and Santa Barbara County had it's best results in years. Good news doesn't sell papers, so you haven't heard much about the improved water quality this year, but 19 out of 20 of our beaches got an A during the dry months. Not surprisingly, Arroyo Burro (Hendry's, The Pit) got a B. Wet conditions showed problems at the usual suspects. One thing to note: Rincon got an A+ during dry conditions and an A during wet conditions, septic tanks and all.

Rincon Sewer
The Rincon sewer project is still full steam ahead, although an appeal is expected by the opponents of the project. It is estimated to cost every homeowner $35,000 to $80,000 to put their home on the sewer. Although Rincon is mentioned most, other nearby communities that will get on the sewer is Sandyland Cove, Sand Point Road and Padaro Lane. Since Rincon straddles both Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, it has made the process a bit more difficult.

Parking Fees

Santa Barbara Blog has a snidbit about the County trying to quietly pass a proposal to start charging parking fees at county parks. Of interest to beachgoers is Goleta Beach, Arroyo Burro Beach, Rincon Beach, Lookout Beach, Ocean Beach, and Rancho Guadalupe Dunes County Park.

Bobby @ 9:30am Thursday

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Chances are high that Bobby Martinez's Round 3 heat in Teahupoo will take place at 9:30 Pacific on Thursday morning and is streamable at the Billabong Pro site. With five of the seven surfers ahead of Bobby in the overall standings eliminated from the event, Bobby can really improve on his current 8th in the world standing with a good showing. In Wednesday action Ventura's Dane Reynolds surfed two excellent heats, the second of which was an insane showing against fellow rookie Jordy Smith.

Gerry Lopez at UCSB May 6th
Gerry Lopez will be speaking at UCSB with an intro by Patagonian Yvon Choinard. This all takes place Tuesday, May 6 at UCSB Campbell Hall at 8 pm. Tickets are $10 general admission & $8 for UCSB students/youth 18 & under. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the Arts & Lectures Ticket Office (893-3535) or Order Online.

Entire books could be written about Gerry Lopez. Suffice it to say Gerry made his surfing reputation at Pipeline, riding it like nobody else before him, or since. He was among a crew of Indonesian adventure pioneers who first surfed Garajagan, or “G-Land”, long considered one of the best lefts in the world. Lopez starred as himself in the surf-cult classic film “Big Wednesday”, and was noted as “shaper of the year” in Surfing Magazine’s annual surfboard design issue, 2003. Gerry Lopez is as charismatic, intelligent and intuitive on land as he is in the waves. He’ll be talking about and presenting images from his just released book “Surf Is Where You Find It”. Don’t miss this extraordinary special event. Introduction by Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia’s distinguished founder.
Grover Anderson at Albertsons May 3rd
Isla Vista musician Grover Anderson will be playing in the Albertson's parking lot (sort of like U2) in Goleta on May 3rd. It is a battle of the bands called "Will Play For Food" featuring Grover, The VelTexans, and Hero & the Victor. The event takes place from 2-5pm so you have plenty of time to pick up some groceries in between sets.
