Bacara Design Review January 27th

Friday, January 23, 2009

The city of Goleta is considering allowing the Bacara to do some major construction that will effect beachgoers in the area. The Bacara wants to yank beachgoers around even more than presently, by re-locating the public parking lot, building 56 more suites, and generally continuing to move the public as far away from J.Lo as they can get away with. The best time for public comments to be heard about the Bacara's continued encroachment at the beach is to write something for a review meeting come up on the 27th of January. Click here to download the pdf of the staff report. About the Design Review Boards and the meeting:
Several community members have inquired about the Bacara project which will appear before the City of Goleta’s Design Review Board, next Tuesday, Jan 27th at 4pm (time certain). Attached is the DRB staff report for your information. Please share with others who might be interested. The Bacara has prepared a brochure of their proposed project which is available at City Hall.

Let me take a moment to inform you about the design review process. The first meeting, which will be held next Tuesday, Jan 27th is a conceptual review where the applicant will present the project to the DRB and the DRB will respond with general comments about the project. Under the DRB;’s purview are such issues as size, bulk, and scale, viewshed, architectural character, parking, site planning, landscaping, lighting, stormwater runoff, grading, and compatibility. I expect that this conceptual review will be the first of several follow-on conceptual review meetings where the project may change based on comments by the DRB. Public comment would be most appreciated and is the most valuable at this point in the review process. There will be other opportunities for the public to participate on this project as it moves along in the process at follow-on DRB, planning commission, council, and Coastal Commission meetings.

SW College #3 Ventura
The 2008-2009 season has not been as kind to the UCSB team as last year, but they seem to have a deep roster. In the recent event at Ventura Harbor, the A Team placed 6th, the C Team placed 8th and the B Team placed 12th. One big bright spot of the season is that Lipoa Kahaleuahi continues her domination of the Women's division with another 1st place showing.

SW Open #7 Huntington Beach
In the ultra competitive SouthWest Open, Conner Coffin recently went down and claimed 1st place in SW Open Men's for the first time, as well as 2nd in Juniors. Other locals making it into the finals were Kokoro Tomatsuri (4th in Open Mens), Patrick Curren (2nd in Open Boys), and Lakey Peterson (4th in Open Womens).

NW Open #4 adn #5 Santa Cruz
Not as many NSSA surfers head up North for the NW Open, but we had a few results to highlight for both events #4 and #5. Charlie Dentzel went and claimed 2nd place and 4th place in Open Juniors while Glennie Rodgers took 4th in Open Womens.

Local Stories - Rincon Classic Edition

Saturday, January 17, 2009

Is it us, or does the Rincon Classic seem to be getting way more exposure this year than in years past. What was once a blip on the radar is now being followed by many outlets, has a live stream on the internet, and with swell forecasted has surfers frothing in 3 counties. Seems Chris Keets has nutured the Classic along for many years and now has rolled out his IPO.

A few quick snidbits from this weeks Indy, Ethan Stewart proposes that Surfers Suffer as Epic Flat Swell Nears End, and Ethan also follows a feel good story of Jason Feist and other J7ers tracking down a thief.

Rincon Classic A Go

Friday, January 16, 2009

Jon Shafer at Rincon Surf Blog (which was recently awarded One Of The Top-Ranked Surfing Websites On The Internet) has gotten the low down from Surf Happens and is calling Game On for this weekends Rincon Classic. After a few years of having to move the date around because of poor conditions, and after a meager winter so far, it is startling that things are lining up for the Classic to go off as scheduled. One has to wonder how a contest at Rincon coinciding with the first swell in months will be received. Jon has all the lowdown on his site for heat times, including this .pdf of with the names of the surfers in Saturday's heats. More info at Surf Happens. Too many names to list, so we'll just throw up a few that caught our eye: Curren, Coffin, McAllister, Brown, Lambert, Robbins, Bennet, Smith, Rizzo, Schildhauer, Regan, Boelsterli, Anderson, Gordon, Mussio, Johnson, Garcia, and Rich.

Steve Roberts Photos Sought

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

A reader has emailed in looking for photos of Steve Roberts who had a lot of surfing connections around these parts in the 60's to 80's. You can email the searcher at this link, or if you are shy contact us at Santa Barbara Surfing with the email to the left.

I am looking for anyone who might have pics of my dad Steve Roberts. He was an amazing surfer who surfed Rincon and the surrounding areas from the late 60's to 84 when he passed away at the age of 31. I know somewhere he's in videos, movies and photos. I have been looking for quite some time so if there is any way you could lead me in a direction that might be fruitful, I would be very grateful. He lived at Santa Clause Lane for a while where my grandparents owned and ran The Frosty. He later lived in Summerland.

GoletaSurfing.com Latest Offerings

Monday, January 12, 2009

Tom over at GoletaSurfing.com has been busy adding great stuff to his site. The first is a cool little quicktime video of skating in Noleta in 1975, this is located on the main page (link above). Tom thinks these kids were bombing Camino Del Rio, which if true is an area hard hit by the Painted Cave Fire and many of those homes you see the kids pull into are now gone and replaced with more modernish places. Of particular awesomeness is the dude skating with a cast. Tom also has photos up on his "Roadtrip" page with photos from a SLO County wave raid. Tom continues with his Tour de Surf with "Random Offerings" which pretty much sums up our slow yet beautfiul winter so far. Last but not least Tom is selling a Goleta Surfing 2009 Calendar which can be picked up at places like Surf Country or bought online for $9.99.

Welcome Back

Monday, January 05, 2009

The first day for many back to work and school. The swell was a disappointment over the last few weeks. Sometimes there was something to surf, if you used the summer scale. We had an Edhat column over the break of our first go with the Go Pro Hero board mounted camera. You can check out the video below, it was pretty fun. Also, we are trying to help out reader Kevin who had his board stolen in North County a few days ago:
This 7'2" fun shape was stolen off the beach at Surf in the morning on 12-27-08. The logo reads Nielson. Please contact Kevin at 757-9457 if you see it. It was my favorite fun shape ever.
We've got one more Go Pro video coming up in a few days in some small but fun surf but hopefully we'll get size someday to take the thing out in.
