Several community members have inquired about the Bacara project which will appear before the City of Goleta’s Design Review Board, next Tuesday, Jan 27th at 4pm (time certain). Attached is the DRB staff report for your information. Please share with others who might be interested. The Bacara has prepared a brochure of their proposed project which is available at City Hall.
Let me take a moment to inform you about the design review process. The first meeting, which will be held next Tuesday, Jan 27th is a conceptual review where the applicant will present the project to the DRB and the DRB will respond with general comments about the project. Under the DRB;’s purview are such issues as size, bulk, and scale, viewshed, architectural character, parking, site planning, landscaping, lighting, stormwater runoff, grading, and compatibility. I expect that this conceptual review will be the first of several follow-on conceptual review meetings where the project may change based on comments by the DRB. Public comment would be most appreciated and is the most valuable at this point in the review process. There will be other opportunities for the public to participate on this project as it moves along in the process at follow-on DRB, planning commission, council, and Coastal Commission meetings.

Rincon Classic is going down this weekend, here are some recent results of local surfers on their NSSA campaigns. (Photo: Conner Coffin courtesy NSSA)
Rincon Surf Blog (which was recently awarded One Of The Top-Ranked Surfing Websites On The Internet) has gotten the low down from Surf Happens and is calling Game On for this weekends Rincon Classic. After a few years of having to move the date around because of poor conditions, and after a meager winter so far, it is startling that things are lining up for the Classic to go off as scheduled. One has to wonder how a contest at Rincon coinciding with the first swell in months will be received. Jon has all the lowdown on his site for heat times, including this .pdf of with the names of the surfers in Saturday's heats. More info at Surf Happens. Too many names to list, so we'll just throw up a few that caught our eye: Curren, Coffin, McAllister, Brown, Lambert, Robbins, Bennet, Smith, Rizzo, Schildhauer, Regan, Boelsterli, Anderson, Gordon, Mussio, Johnson, Garcia, and Rich.
Annual Sundance Beach Amateur Surf Video Contest is taking applications until February 15th. A short video is below to pump you up. You can win all sorts of sick stuff.I am looking for anyone who might have pics of my dad Steve Roberts. He was an amazing surfer who surfed Rincon and the surrounding areas from the late 60's to 84 when he passed away at the age of 31. I know somewhere he's in videos, movies and photos. I have been looking for quite some time so if there is any way you could lead me in a direction that might be fruitful, I would be very grateful. He lived at Santa Clause Lane for a while where my grandparents owned and ran The Frosty. He later lived in Summerland.
been busy adding great stuff to his site. The first is a cool little quicktime video of skating in Noleta in 1975, this is located on the main page (link above). Tom thinks these kids were bombing Camino Del Rio, which if true is an area hard hit by the Painted Cave Fire and many of those homes you see the kids pull into are now gone and replaced with more modernish places. Of particular awesomeness is the dude skating with a cast. Tom also has photos up on his "Roadtrip" page with photos from a SLO County wave raid. Tom continues with his Tour de Surf with "Random Offerings" which pretty much sums up our slow yet beautfiul winter so far. Last but not least Tom is selling a Goleta Surfing 2009 Calendar which can be picked up at places like Surf Country or bought online for $9.99.
