Lindsay Paddle Out

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

In true time honored ocean culture spirit, there will be a paddle out to celebrate the life of Lindsay Rose at 5:30 this Sunday, April 26, at Refugio State Beach. From the Rincon Surf Blog:
The parking fee for Refugio State Beach will be waived after 5 pm for anyone attending the paddle-out. If you arrive prior to 5 pm, please note that the regular parking fee of $8 will apply. When you arrive, check in at the Entrance Gate and then gather at the lawn area at the west end of the beach park below the Education Center. Please plan to meet us on the beach by 5:15; the paddle-out will take place at 5:30. Due to limited parking, we strongly encourage carpooling. There is a chance you may have to park on the road ou tside the park and walk in.

Lindsay enjoyed three wonderful summers at Refugio Junior Guards and won the Most Valuable Guard Award. She was looking forward to working at Refugio Jr. Guards this summer, but tragically, Lindsay left us April 5, 2009, when she died from injuries due to a surfing accident at Sands beach in Goleta. After paddling out, Lindsay lost consciousness for unknown reasons; she was pulled to the beach by her friend.

A freshman at Dos Pueblos High School, Lindsay was in the prestigious Engineering Academy, played on the DP soccer team, and played shortstop on the DP softball team. She surfed with the DP Surf Team, and had just started learning to break dance with the DP Break Dance Club.

Sunday Afternoon Gaviota Surfers?

Being as how Sunday was a blazingly hot day and there was a little swell in the water, there is a chance that a surfer out in the water along the Gaviota Coast saw what happened to a plane flown by local orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stephen Birch. The County, State, and Coast Guard were based at El Capitan State Beach looking for the plane and pilot. Currently Scott Birch is looking for info about what his father (an avid and experienced acrobatics pilot) was doing offshore. (Photo: Mike Bush).

We had a few Sunday sessions to the South of us, the 2nd of which was Little Rincon around 2:00pm. At that time we saw a spectacular display of aviation prowess, as 4-5 sleek single engine planes took turns making huge roundhouse cutbacks along the Western side of the pier, then making huge looping turns out to sea, before coming back and making another huge cutback along the Eastern side of the pier. These may be the same group of planes we often see on Saturdays or Sundays using Rincon has a pivot point for massive turns. The way these pilots use the waviness of the land to cut and bank, one has to wonder if they are surfers. The lead plane on Sunday was yellow, Dr. Birch's plane is reported to be red, blue, and yellow.

Tom Curren at Sandbar

Monday, April 20, 2009

This Wednesday, April 22nd, Tom Curren and Friends will perform at the Sandbar Restaurant to benefit the The Invisible Children. This is a pre-benefit party of the Global Awareness Showcase at SBCC on April 25th.
This benefit precedes Invisible Children's nine country, one hundred city rally on April 25th, 2009 aimed to bring attention to the plight of the children abducted and forced to fight as soldiers in Central East Africa. The rally participants will be asking governments and international bodies to develop a strategy and support existing efforts to rescue the child soldiers abducted by the LRA. Santa Barbara is selected to be one of the one hundred cities to showcase this global initiative.

With thousands of dollars worth of surf hardware and merchandise to be given away and auctioned off including a surfboard signed by Curren and a Stand-up Paddleboard with paddle donated from sponsors, this benefit party will be non-stop. The evening's fundraising efforts will include a silent auction, poster/picture signing, raffle give-away, guest bartending by major surf celebrities, drink specials and live music with Tom Curren and a special surprise guest!

Bobby Martinez Round 3 Bells

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Bobby Martinez is set to take the water at Bells Beach around 6:00pm west coast time. His Round 3 heat against Mick Fanning promises to be a good one. Heat can be streamed at Rip Curl.

In Bobby's interview after his Round 2 victory he was very candid about Bells Beach, commenting that he probably would never surf there if wasn't for the contest. The often mushy Bells was a little frustrating for a goofyfooter according to Bobby.

“The Women and the Waves” is a documentary surf film that explores the lives of female surfers who, through the decades, have chosen to paddle head first into the male dominated sport of surfing and found a place of their own. Surfer girls, women who surf, women who don’t, female athletes, and the men who love them gain insight into what it’s like to “Surf like a Girl!” This inspiring film, featuring generations of women surfers, reveals what has transcended surfing’s status as a sport to become a passion so strong, it is the dominant force in their lives.

Lindsay Rose and Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy

Tuesday, April 07, 2009

There have been quite a few reader emails asking how they can help the Rose family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy, where Lindsay was a student. Once at the site you can donate with a credit card at Paypal or print out a quick form to send with a check. A great way to honor one of our own.

Wednesday Evening Sands Rescue

Thursday, April 02, 2009

Information is slowly trickling in on the near drowning that happened at Sands last night (Wednesday April 1st). According to sources reporting in to Santa Barbara Surfing, 15 year old Lindsay Rose nearly drowned while at Sands Beach in Goleta around 5:15 yesterday evening and was without heart function for an hour. She is currently at Cottage Hospital, and is breathing on her own, as well as her heart is beating on it's own. She is on a ventilator and in a drug induced coma to give her body a rest.

Please take a moment to offer a prayer for Lindsay Rose within your spiritual belief.

(Update: Eyewitness accounts that were posted below have been removed to respect the privacy of the family.)

We here at Santa Barbara Surfing send our prayers out to Lindsay and her family. We'll keep the site updated with whatever we can find out.

Kelly Slater and Malloy Brothers Announce Nightly Appearance at the Arlington

Wednesday, April 01, 2009

Kelly Slater and the Malloy Brothers have announced, through their publicist, that they will begin a nightly appearance at the Arlington in downtown Santa Barbara starting May 1st, 2009. On the heels of what seems like bi-weekly appearances for local surf movies, it only seems fitting that the troupe would commit to a 2 month span of nightly performances. Details have yet to unfold, but sources close to the surfers said that their would be a 7pm and 9pm show 7 days a week. The source also said Tom Curren would "likely" be opening the show with a 20 minute set.

"I feel like I've been doing Q&A sessions after surf movies in Santa Barbara so much lately," offered 9 time world champion Kelly Slater, "I thought why not just do a nightly show there." Chris Malloy, the shyest of the Malloy brothers, was unavailable for comment but his manager offered, "Let's hope his brothers aren't out of town during the show, leaving Chris to squirm on stage like at that Irish surf film premier." One of the other Malloy Brothers, who could not be identified due to his beard and introspective speech, offered, "Surfing... is the best way to experience... nature... when we are out there... surfing on our sponsors dollars... we feel... so blessed.... also, no one has ever surfed where we surf... at least in the conditions .... we surf it in."

As more news and information breaks on this subject you can trust Santa Barbara Surfing will be the first to report it.
