Goleta Surfing's Latest

Thursday, May 21, 2009

Tom at Goleta Surfing has some great stuff up from the waves we had in early May at "Surf, Wind, and Fire." During that series of windswell we had a chance to surf the same Goleta spot five days in a row on a shortboard, and that might be a record for anytime outside of Winter. Tom has more of those photos, which you can order, on Shutterfly. Tom has also a Cinco De Mayo session with Shutterfly photos too.

Bobby Martinez Wins 2009 Billabong Pro Teahupoo

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Bobby beat Taj Burrow in the finals of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo. He did it with a 8.73 and a 9.73 on two mental barrels. He is still without a major sponsor. Could Billabong be a destination for him after 2 victories at the Billabong Pro Teahupoo and two at the Billabong Pro Mundaka?

Stolen Rincon Boards

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Five boards were stolen from Rincon regular "Cat", that have extreme sentimental value.
The Rincon Board and the Yater are the of most concern and are extremely identifiable.

Email Cal at caterincal@gmail.com if you have seen these boards.

Sacred Craft Expo

Wednesday, May 06, 2009

The weekend of May 16-17 is the Sacred Craft Expo at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Entrance is $7 or free for groms 15 and under. Check out the site for more info and this is from the promoters:

WHO: Surfboard lovers from all over
WHAT: SACRED CRAFT Consumer Surfboard Expo
WHEN: May 16 & 17 2009
WHERE: Ventura County Fairgrounds, Surfers Point
WHY: Because surfers really only care about two things: Waves and the equipment to ride them with.

May 16 & 17, 2009 the SACRED CRAFT Consumer Surfboard Expo will visit the Ventura County Fairgrounds for two days of surfboards, live shaping, demos, seminars, movies, music and good times…but mostly surfboards.

The Tribute to the Masters Shape-off competition presented by Channel Islands surfboards will honor legendary Santa Barbara surfboard craftsman John Bradbury. Bradbury is a highly influential Santa Barbara shaper/surfer learning his craft under the tutelage of legend Renny Yater. Bradbury was a 'locals local' and the epitome of the local shaper with a faithful clientele of underground wave riders, a shaping bay in his backyard, and a keen eye on approaching swells. Through the '60s and '70s, Bradbury's "Creative Freedom" logo was synonymous with the underground Santa Barbara surfing scene. In the mid-eighties he was among a handful of board builders who began experimenting with polystyrene epoxy. Bradbury's lightweight contemporary designs caught the attention of top pros such as Martin Potter, Cheyne Horan and Brad Gerlach. Sadly John Bradbury died of leukemia in 1999. Ten years later, in the spring of 2009, six regional shapers will honor Bradbury's legacy in the "Tribute to the Masters Shape-off" by replicating a classic Bradbury design.

"I'm super stoked to see my dad and his work honored in this fashion," said John's son Josh Bradbury. "My dad's time on this earth was too short, but thankfully people still appreciate his shaping skills and more importantly, what a great person he was."

The SACRED CRAFT Consumer Surfboard Expo is an opportunity for shapers, surfboard craftsman and surfboard manufacturers to come together under one roof and share their passion with the surfboard loving public. It operates with one sole objective, to bring passionate surfers in front of passionate board builders. Plans for a Fall 2009 expo in Del Mar, and a Spring 2010 Expo in Huntington Beach are already underway.

Fly In The Champagne Re-Premier For Local Surf Teams

Monday, May 04, 2009

The highly anticipated surf movie featuring Andy and Kelly, "Fly in the Champagne", re-premiers* in town as a fundraiser for the SBHS and SBJHS surf teams. It all goes down this Friday, May 8th at 6:30pm at the Marjorie Luke Theatre @ 721 E. Cota (on the SBJHS campus.) Admission is $10, there will be live music, refreshments, and of course a raffle with good surf swag. Checkout the details and trailer below.
The rappers would call this a collabo. A sophisticated gentleman would call this a stunning collaboration. Surfers call this the most anticipated surf dvd in a long time. Kelly Slater and Andy Irons. Two weeks in Indo. Big budgets. Expensive cameras everywhere. Heavenly. A Fly In The Champagne, the latest surfing dvd from Irons Brothers Productions, gives us what we want - the best surfers (Kelly Slater and Andy Irons) in the best waves (Kandui Resort in the Mentawai Islands). Beyond the ripping, the movie also documents the fierce competitive rivalry between Slater (9X ASP World Champion) and Irons (3X ASP World Champion) that has brewed for the past decade. Even the two biggest surf companies (Quiksilver and Billabong) teamed up to help put together this movie.

(*You may have heard of previous premiers of Fly in the Champagne, but do not be fooled by imitations. It was pulled after a few showings (including one at the Arlington in February) to do some re-editing and now it will be back in the wild again.)
