I spent a lot of time hanging around Tom�s contests back then. At the time when I was around 5 or 6 years old, I was very, very hyperactive. I would wreak havoc at all the events�running around, getting into trouble in various ways, maybe by throwing sand at people, et cetera. My brother�s friends would provoke me but I guess I was just also in my own world. I�m not sure why, but after I went through that hyper stage I eventually became pretty shy and didn�t like the being the center of attention anymore.

The Stearns Wharf Near Shore Real-Time Temperature Website is back in the house. It was down for some time but you can get up to the minute temperatures online 24 hours a day at the easy web address h2otemp.com. See daily, weekly, or monthly graphs. You can even shiver in your boots as you see how the temp dipped down for the 4th of July weekend. Just in time to give those doing the no-wetsuits-allowed Semana Nautica 3 mile swim some hypothermia. Right now we are seeing a temperature of 61.2�F, a 7 day high.

Rogue Wave Exhibit

Jon Shafer's Santa Barbara Surfer

Jon Shafer, who has been running Rincon Surf Blog for over a year, has announced on his blog the 2.0 version of his SantaBarbaraSurfer.com. Whereas the site before was a message board for surfers to post their thoughts online, the 2.0 version has a nice splash screen reminiscent of the ASP and Surfermag sites, as well as sections for News, Events, Profiles, Photos, and Videos. The new site seems to be a continuation of Shafer's AloHawk section at Noozhawk.com as you can place advetisments on the site through Noozhawk. Like Noozhawk, the site was handsomely designed by PixelFive. Congratulatoins to Shafer on developing another fine site to serve surfers on the South Coast. We here at Santa Barbara Surfing look forward to reading some great content.

Tommy, Bobby, Win Heats

The much anticipated "Clash of the Icons" between Tom Curren and Occy went off in less than perfect conditions today. Tom Curren won the friendly heat with a couple of decent maneuvers on a couple of decent waves. JBay was closing out a little too much, there wasn't much in the way of tubes to be had, and it was so early in the morning that I don't think either surfer could fully see their next section. There is to be a 2nd heat between the two surfers before the Finals.

Bobby Martinez also had an excellent day, beating Roy Powers in Round 2 and Ben Dunn in Round 3. He advanced to the Quarterfinals against Joel Parkinson.

Curren vs. Occy 10:15pm Tonight

Down at the Billabong Pro in JBay, Tom Curren is scheduled to take on Occy at 7:15am ZAF time, equating to Monday 10:15pm west coast time. The heat can be streamed here. Chances are Bobby Martinez's heat against Roy Powers will take place close to midnight west coast time.

Closest Thing To Walking On Water

Saturday, July 11th from 6-10pm at Latitude Gallery is the Opening Reception for the exhibit "Closest Thing To Walking On Water," which will run from July 11-30. This is a show by surfing artists and art making surfers. It is a Surfrider benefit which gets 10% of sales. Live music by Travers Adler, Barefoot provides the wine and New Belgium busts out the beer.

Carp Skate Flicks

The good folks in Carpinteria are banding together to get a skate park built. To that end they are having a Skate Video Contest followed by a Skate Flick Night.

First about the Flick night, it is on Saturday, July 25th at the Art Center, 855 Linden Ave. Music starts at 5:00 and movies start at dark=-thirty. Their will be pro skate movies as well as amateur movies from the Skate Video Contest. Bring a picnic (or buy some beer, wine, and tacos), a chair, a blanket, and get ready for Skate Mania. Second is the Skate Video Contest. This is for local skaters to put together a 5 minute skate video. 1st place gets $150, and the top entries will be shown at the Flick Night.

Bobby in Brazil

Bobby Martinez has advanced to Round 4 at the ASP World Tour event in Brazil. He did it by beating Jihad Khodr and Phil MacDonald in Round 1 and Tiago Peres in Round 3. He will face rookie Hawaiian sensation Dustin Barca in Round 4. The heat won't be until tommorrow, sometime around 5am PDT if the contest is on. Santa Barbara Surfing Back From Montana

Santa Barbara Surfing is back in action after two weeks spent mostly in Montana. We were able to document the SUP craze even further as two SUPers glided across Whitefish Lake, Montana. They even sold those huge "Laird" boards in a local sporting goods store, right next to the fly fishing gear. These guys were pretty mellow though, not paddling outside all the time and back paddling the set waves.Another way inland culture has taken to surfing is shown in this next photo of LB demonstrating "Wake Surfing." This was our first time trying the sport which involves "surfing" behind a boat without holding onto a rope. Wake Surfing sadly led to pope's visit to Dr. Ryu for a jacked up knee. You can be in shape as much as you want for surfing, but getting dragged behind a boat with a rope puts some torque in places surfing surely doesn't.

Montana, at least in the summer, is an outdoors person's paradise, and a trip any surfer would enjoy for the scenery, outdoor activities, mellow down to earth people, and empty space. That said, we're glad we're back in Santa Barbara and can enjoy jumping in the ocean with just some trunks and a board (once that ol' knee heals up.)

Happy Graduation

Happy graduation to all of groms out of Jr. High and the Shredsters out of High School that graduated yesterday, and to all of the UCSB'ers graduating next week. There is certainly an energy around town with all of the hoopla. As for the energy in the water, it is only from the South, so in town sessions are nearly impractical. However Monday and Tuesday some fun windswell fill into some spots to keep some surfers wet.

A bear was crusing around on Sands Beach recently. With all the fog we had, things were pretty empty down there. With school out, that bear is bound to replaced by groms.

Fly in the Champagne Re-Release Re-Tried

Something that didn't make it into our latest Edhat column about past and future local surf items of interest is the new date for the re-premier of Fly in the Champagne this Monday, June 1st. This surf movie showing, to benefit the SBHS and SBJHS surf teams, was postponed from the Jesusita Fire. Same info as before, music starts at 6:30pm, Movie at 7:30pm. Location is the Marjorie Luke Theater @ 721 E. Cota (on the SBJHS campus). Admission is $10, there will be live music, refreshments, and of course a raffle with good surf swag.

Fly in the Champagne is the highly anticipated movie chronicling the rivalry between Andy Irons and Kelly Slater. Check out the trailer here, and the flyer attached.

Come out this Monday night and support your homegrown local surf teams, their parents, and the surf community.

Carrers on the Coast

Carrers on the Coast: Thursday, May 28, 4:00 p.m.�- 5:30 p.m.
Learn about several exciting careers working near the coast, from aquarist to coastal ecotourism. This event is a must for EEMB majors and we strongly encourage any student with an interest in science to attend. You will learn about various occupations, career paths and skill sets necessary to establishing a successful coastal career.

Goleta Surfing's Latest

Tom at Goleta Surfing has some great stuff up from the waves we had in early May at "Surf, Wind, and Fire." During that series of windswell we had a chance to surf the same Goleta spot five days in a row on a shortboard, and that might be a record for anytime outside of Winter. Tom has more of those photos, which you can order, on Shutterfly. Tom has also a Cinco De Mayo session with Shutterfly photos too.

5th Annual Brandon Yates Memorial

One of our favorite local events of the year is coming up in two weeks, and this year they switched it around and made it a surfboard demo, team contest, and beach party. We've added an entry form you can download and fill out, and below is all kinds of info from the organizers:

The 5th Annual Brandon Yates Memorial will take place at Emma Wood on Sunday, May 31st. This years event is a Surfboard Demo and Beach Party. There will be demo boards on hand from Channel Islands, J7, ...lost, Roberts, Resist, Surftech and Wayne Rich. We will have a fun team contest at noon. Team J7 is throwing out the challenge right now. Teams will SHARE one board and we will have an hour long heat. One person from each team will be in the water at a time, catch one wave and come in to switch the board with their teammate. A $20 donation gets you the board demo and access to the contest. A $30 donation will get you the demo, contest, Brandon Memorial Tee shirt and lunch!

Bobby Martinez Wins 2009 Billabong Pro Teahupoo

Bobby beat Taj Burrow in the finals of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo. He did it with a 8.73 and a 9.73 on two mental barrels. He is still without a major sponsor. Could Billabong be a destination for him after 2 victories at the Billabong Pro Teahupoo and two at the Billabong Pro Mundaka?

Bobby Makes Semi's

Bobby Martinez Defeats Andy Irons

With an opening ride of a 9.5, Bobby Martinez defeated 3 time world champ Andy Irons in Round 3 at Teahupoo. He now advances to the Quarterfinals against either Jordy Smith or Adriano de Souza. Pizell: White with two black stripes going down the middle.
Huge Longboard with a Tsunami Wave on it.
Bauer - The Rincon Pit board - Shark teeth on bottom and skull on top. See photo.

The Rincon Board and the Yater are the of most concern and are extremely identifiable.
