Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

November Overview | 1995 Overview

Date/Time:
Monday, Nov. 20th, 7:30 am - 9:30 am
Location:
Indicators, Rincon, CA
Weather:
Dense fog with slowly building ESE winds.
Conditions:
Glassy early, winds nice for about 15 mins then quickly turned to junk with S chop coming up the channel.
Swell:
Weakened WNW groundswell. Shoulder high on the sets.
Comments:
Apparently it was better yesterday; I spent the day dealing with undergraduate experimental work at Campus Point, which was going off with head high plus sets and excellent shape from the wave reflection off the rocks.

Best today before the chop got on it. I'm not sure what happened at the end of my best wave, from the indicator well past the rivermouth, coming off the top and hard off the bottom trying to beat a section, I saw the lip descending and tried to crank over even harder on the inside rail, then released a little and crouched defensively. Instead of the expected lip in the head I got what felt all the world like water descending from a high arcing lawn sprinkler. Confused, I came out onto the shoulder, wondering what the heck happened.

Downside, I had taken a day off and early on felt stiffness in my neck / upper trapezius, it hurts whenever I turn it to the right. So far I've iced it, rubbed it with menthol, used a compression bandage on it, run it under the hot shower, stretched it, rubbed it with rubbing alcohol, and taken aspirin. Any tips or advice on dealing with neck injury?

(I will compile the tips along with what I get from the health center into a summary... maybe we should have a common surf injury FAQ on alt.surfing).
