pissed or stoked

Date/Time:
Monday, Nov. 13th, 8:00 am - 10:30 am
Location:
Santa Barbara County, CA
Weather:
Dense fog on the drive. Sunny with strong sideshore SW winds later.
Conditions:
Poor. SW wind blowing sideshore and sending chop up the coast.
Swell:
Walled, shoulder high to solidly overhead. Buoys 10 ft. 17s.
Comments:
Most of the sets were coming in and walling out to the big rock on the inside, but the occasional makeable wave came in. Lots of late drops and poundings. Chop was making it difficult. Still fun since town was so very flat due to north swell angle.

Much better than the "rideable" surf my roommate got yesterday, will he be pissed or stoked when he finds out?

turning nothing into something

Date/Time:
Sunday, Nov. 12th, 11:00 am
Location:
Isla Vista, CA
Weather:
Cool with early morning fog, slowly burning off w/ building onshores.
Conditions:
A little bit wrinkled.
Swell:
Flat. Pt. Conception buoy anemic at 4 ft., 9 sec period.
Comments:
Surfed small Rincon yesterday, almost thigh-high on the sets north of the indicator. Got a compliment on "turning nothing into something" by one of the guys out, that felt good, especially since I was surfing my old brown Watermans Guild board and wearing my torn neon wetsuit, first I'd ever purchased.

Woke up at 6:00 hoping for a good sign for a little surf trip north but all the buoys said "nay". Figured I'd let my roommate charge it and went back to sleep.

I'm not sure if I'll be stoked for him and his buds or pissed if they scored... turns out they got "rideable" waves somewhere in the county but I don't feel too bad about missing "rideable" stuff.

Surfrider for the first time

Date/Time: Friday, Nov. 10th, 8:00 am Location: Rincon, CA Weather: Cool with large clouds over the bluff blocking the sun. Conditions: Clean. Too bad about the lack of swell. Swell: Nothing happening. Lots of wind up north but nothing has been showing here on the inside for days. Comments: Attended the local chapter of Surfrider for the first time last night and am now pumped to help out. Santa Barbara County has many problems facing it and the chapter needs your help. See my Environment section for information. -TM (original post here)

Must be the titanium

Date/Time: Tuesday, Nov. 7th, 7:30 am - 8:30 am Location: Rincon, CA Weather: Sunny and warm... too warm in the new wetsuit. Must be the titanium. Conditions: Glassy and nice. Some south swell coming in as ankle-high bump. Swell: NNW groundswell peaked in the evening. Bordering on waist high on the occasional set waves. Comments: Felt like getting wet. Some good shaped waves here and there, mostly junk. TM (Original Report Here)

Santa Barbara County

Date/Time:
Monday, Nov. 6th, 8:30 am - 10:30 am
Location:
Santa Barbara County, CA
Weather:
Sunny with thick battleship clouds hanging on the outside.
Conditions:
Superhigh tide confusion. Blown out by 10:00.
Swell:
Setty new winter groundswell, as big as overhead, mostly shoulder high.
Comments:
Was out there alone for a while, just me and my sharkanoia and the cleanup sets. I was eventually joined by three others, one of whom got washed in by the first set to arrive and the others who stuck around to share the walling rights bordering on closeout. The wind came on early, as it often does there, but still we got some good ones.

showing potential

Date/Time:
Thursday, Nov. 2nd, 7:30 am - 12:00 noon
Location:
Rincon, CA
Weather:
Blue skies with big grey clouds barging by and foghorns in the distance.
Conditions:
Perfect glass. Occasional high tide ripples off the point.
Swell:
Weak NW groundswell, from dead flat to very spotty waist high sets.
Comments:
Ulric talking to me last night about how Sands was "showing potential", so got amped for a good swell in the morning. What is "potential" in a sport so full of positive hype? There's "potential" in ankle-high slop. Burn...

Heavy kelp again though not as much as on the Halloween session... and not in the same place. The few waves that came were fast down the line and fun, but too few and far between.

Still, I was the only one out for a while, and that alone made it a nice experience.
