Santa Barbara Surf Report Archive
April 1996 Overview

April swung in strong with an all-time epic day on the first of the month, then tapered off. West windswells began filling in amongst the last groundswells of the winter season.

Onshore flow created tremendous cold water upwelling, and the middle of the month had the coldest water temperatures since about the same time last year. By the month's end, it was finally no-booties season.

Highlights of the month were fun surf sessions with John Airey from the newsgroup on the 6th of the month and Easter Sunday. Also hooked up with my old roommate from Caltech on the 14th up in the northern part of the county.

Low point of the month was a hideous wipeout during the last gasps of the winter storm track, on the 17th. No injuries resulted from the wipeout, but the last session of April earned me a nice gash on the top of my foot

Out of 16 reports, got good surf about 8 times. The average wave height was in the chest high range.
