Santa Barbara Surf Report Archive
August 1996 Overview

The dog days of summer. A parade of smallish southern hemisphere swells characterized the month of August, with enough size to make it barely rideable most of the month but only one swell with any real juice to it.

The month started off with a small pulse from Hurricane Douglass and peaked a week later with a four day swell running from the 9th to the 12th of the month. The highlight of the month was a freak west windswell that lit up Rincon on the last Friday of August.

Out of eleven sessions, four were surfed on my longboard. Got good waves about four times (once on my longboard). The average wave height was in the waist high range.
