Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

August Overview | 1996 Overview

Date/Time:
Wednesday, August 28th, 8:30 am - 10:00 am
Location:
Sequit / Secos / Leo Carrillo
Weather:
Warm and sunny, some light haze but no clouds.
Conditions:
Excellent with some high-tide swash off the lineup rock.
Swell:
Pissant swell from the south, knee to waist high.
Comments:
Was hoping for something better after hearing a 3.6 ft, 17 s. reading on the Santa Monica Basin buoy late yesterday afternoon. The swell obviously faded and the tide did the rest. Paddled out anyways into bitter cold water -- prevailing sideshores mean terrible upwelling conditions.

Got a few quick little waves to start, pumped them hard to keep my blood going, then picked off one or two little set waves before going in with the shivers. Naturally when I got to shore, a shoulder high set rolled through.

The Jr. Lifeguards were setting up for a late morning surf competition on foam BZ trifins. Lots of them out beforehand getting in some freesurfing.

This Friday, August 30th, there will be a concert benefit and membership drive for the Surfrider Foundation at Toes Tavern on State Street (downtown Santa Barbara). 3-time WCT champion and S.B. local Tommy Curren will be playing. Be there!
