Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

March Overview | 1996 Overview

Date/Time:
Thursday, March 28th, 8:30 am - 10:30 am
Location:
Rincon Point
Weather:
Overcast and drizzly, no wind.
Conditions:
Excellent, glassy and breaking hollow.
Swell:
Fading west swell, early sets to shoulder high, finishing waist high.
Comments:
Checked the cove right off the bat, only 2 guys out and one gal just going out at the top. Didn't look too good, but figured it'd be worthwhile for a maintenance surf, maybe some sets would come in.

Paddled out with a couple of guys from north of San Francisco. The sets were coming in frequently, quick and clean zippers that were hard to beat from the very top but so fun once they started pulling into the bay on the inside. The perfect shape kept it totally surfable and rippable despite the small size.

I got my best two waves a little down from the first section, someone would take off on the outside, call everyone off, then not make it past me and it's off to the freeway we go.

As the crowd thickened, the waves declined. Had only one drop-in, a longboarder for whom I made room, but he still almost nailed me with his board after pearling a noseride out on the shoulder.

"You almost got me with that one, but not quite."

"Next time I will get you."

Some apology, eh? But I was too stoked out on the perfect little peelers to care, though my hand got the worse of the karate chop I delivered to keep the airborne log out of my face.

New northwest swell is coming, but it may be too small and/or too north to land well here.
