Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

September Overview | 1996 Overview

Date/Time:
Monday, September 23rd, 8:00 am - 11:00 am
Location:
Sequit / Secos / Leo Carrillo
Weather:
Mild overcast morning, sun burning through by noon.
Conditions:
Good to fair, a little morning sick with developing westerlies.
Swell:
Waist to shoulder high out of the south with quarter-hour head high sets.
Comments:
Rincon looked surprisingly good as I drove past this morning, possibly thigh high in the cove, contradicting the weak East Channel buoy reading. No matter, pressed on down the coast for one of my last shots at a fun summer swell.

Had the best position for all of the inside waves, was generous in giving away some to those who didn't want to hug the rock. Outside sets were cracking on the rock outcroppings even on the early morning high tide. A little closed out and mean early on, lining up with more juice as the tide began to retreat.

Got a few floaters off the end section, a rail click with a newbie surfer from Venice who camped out with a buddy in a big van last night, one trip being dragged over the body rock, a couple of other poundings, lots of cutbacks and a lot of fun.

More about Sands Beach. If you have an 'A' or 'S' permit, you can get a West Campus permit for free from Parking Services. The uni is trying to cut down on impacts to the Coal Oil Point Preserve by edict of the Cali Coastal Commission.
