Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

December Overview 1997 Overview

Date/Time: Monday, December 15th, 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Location: Rincon Point
Weather: Light westerly clearing winds, sunny skies.
Conditions: Fair atop the indicator, glassing off by evening.
Swell: Dropping WNW swell, 5-8 ft at 12 s on outer buoys.
Surf: Waist to chest high with set peaks to head high.
Comments: Drove as far south as the fairgrounds looking for waves, but the afternoon blowout was in full effect there with size not much larger than Rincon. Paddled out mainly to stay in shape back at the indicator.

Fairly surfable, with the tide helping out what would otherwise have been really lackluster waves. Very inconsistent sets coming across the indicator and into the rivermouth, a strong current sweeping most everyone down the point. Picked around for some little ones for a while and then chanced going way up atop the point, patience paying off repeatedly with the choicest of the sets coming right to me.

Went in through the cove as night arrived; glowing sunset framing the offshore rigs and islands nicely; excellent visibility today. I could see all the way to the mesa to the north and to Port Hueneme to the south.
