Met up again with Brian, on his way into the northern territories
and then the Rockies for a solid winter of snowboarding. Things
looked miserable from the Rincon lot but there was a little swell
showing on the buoys before I left, so south was the call. Like
Robert, Brian had never surfed Stables (or any of the Fairgrounds
lineups before), so that was the call for an attempt at late afternoon
rideable waves. He had originally hoped to make it up here in
the early AM for a DP sesh, and we were bumming at the small waves
and lost opportunity to travel north.
We scored. Early good signs were seeing sets reeling by from Figueroa way back at the tracks, and the winds were pretty light. Suited up fast and had an easy paddle out into the lineup. First wave came wide and large, just as I was explaining the lineups and how "we're not really where the wave breaks except when its big" to Brian, dropped into a steep overhead wave, a little lumpy but much hollower than the previous swell. By the time I got back outside, Brian had dialed into a few up by the rivermouth. Like Surfer Bob, he opted to stay up there, where it was breaking perhaps a little larger on the smaller waves but closing out. I hung down by the lower lineup and waited for the ones that swung wide and hit the submerged reef then reeled all the way to the showers. Conditions continued to improve and I surfed until I couldn't get myself standing; kind of hobbled in on my last wave and hit the aforementioned showers. Brian came in about a half hour later, cold but stoked. Another satisfied first-time surf at Stables. Even better was returning home to find cold Dixies in the fridge and plates of steaming homemade shrimp etouffee ready for consumption, prepared with a smile by my lovely wife. |
