Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

February Overview | 1997 Overview

Date/Time:
Thursday, February 6th, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Location:
Rincon Point
Weather:
Patchy high clouds, light side-onshore breezes.
Conditions:
Fair, some wind chop and some windswell breaking up the peaks.
Swell:
WNW groundswell, long-period (17 s) and inconsistent, chest to shoulder high with occasional head high sets.
Comments:
Unable to make the early morning paddle-out due to work. Bailed after eating lunch and paddled out into a fairly crowded lineup on the indicator which slowly cleared out as the sun began moving into the lower third of the sky.

Most of the waves were short-lived with mushy shoulders leading into fast bowls atop the rivermouth. The best peaks were at the rivermouth as well. Opted instead to stay on the top, fight the longshore current pumping down the point, and get the occasional ride to the bottom of the rivermouth, where the bottom of the wave dropped out and dumped a little knee-high brown grinder into waist-deep water.

Headed down the the cove after drying off. From the bottom of the trail at around 4pm I counted nearly 100 surfers between the freeway and the top of the cove. The waves looked clean and fun, breaking nicely over the sandbar on the low tide.
