Did an interview yesterday with the Santa Barbara News-Press re: myself and this web site. The article should be out sometime tomorrow (Saturday). I'll post a copy of it somewhere on this site when I get the opportunity.

This morning was a photo shoot. Brought the longboard and was a little disappointed to see lackluster surf compared to what I saw yesterday, but there were still occasional sets coming through. Met up with Len, the photography director, on the beach.

The idea for the shoot they tossed at me originally was to have me out in the water holding a longboard in one hand and an old monitor in the other. After the interview and some discussion of the inappropriateness of the 'net surfing' analogy, the photographer and I agreed to do a more conventional surf-shoot.

It was still a bit odd to be out there trying to get waves for the sake of getting pictures, and while it didn't really detract from the surf session I was aware of the lens on the beach which made me a little self-conscious.

To make matters worse, I didn't bring any wax, and fell on my first couple of waves. Hopefully the article tomorrow will show some of the later ones rather than the warm-up sets.

The waves were smallish and warbly with the reflections coming off the rocks on the outside. Slow and mushy, good footwork practice, not even rideable on a board under 9' long. Chatted for a while with a 40-year old fellow on a trip down here from Santa Cruz; he was at UCSB 20 years ago but never started surfing until just last year. Exchanged stories about fun surf at 1st Peak and the Hook, and heard yet again about how I missed the best summer swell last July while I was in Minnesota. Got a good one from the point in to the pump house and showers, and headed home to cook some chicken soup for Bettye, who is also suffering from a cold.
