- Date/Time:
- Thursday, February 27th, 6:30 am - 7:00 am
- Location:
- Rincon / Little Rincon / Campus Point
- Weather:
- Overcast with building onshores.
- Conditions:
- Poor declining to victory at sea as we watched it.
- Swell:
- Small WNW wind and groundswells, waist high sets.
- Comments:
- Woke up early and picked up Tim', we were hoping to get something before the winds got it, but no such luck. Most of the energy on the bouys appears here to be landing mainly as wind bump and chop with a few small lines thrown in.
Parked at the base of the bridge to the oil island at La Conchita for the first time and watched the fishermen pile back into their cars with the morning's catch. By the time we turned back around on the freeway at Oil Piers, there were whitecaps in the lineup.
Went to check Campus Point at lunch time. The howling westerlies were coming through sideshore atop the point and offshore at Poles. Offshore! Pefection conditions with each peak being fanned back. Occasionally a waist-high set would come through.
Checked it again at dusk, the winds had picked up to 40 knots on the gusts, with a storm front pouring over the Santa Ynez mountains and throwing up rainbows. No rain at the point, and a gorgeous sunset looking to set up. A few people out challenging the broken up offshore peaks.
The Isla Vista and Ventura Chapters of the Surfrider Foundation have organized a benefit and competition at Rincon. The Rincon Clean Water Classic is this weekend, March 1st and 2nd. Funds donated will benefit a study of the creek and watershed at Rincon to determine pollution sources and possible avenues of dealing with them.
