Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

February Overview | 1997 Overview

Date/Time:
Friday, February 28th, 9:00 am, Noon, 3 pm
Location:
Devereux / Campus Point
Weather:
Sunny with declining onshore winds.
Conditions:
Victory at sea at Devereux and Sands, clean on the inside at Campus.
Swell:
WNW windswell with underlying groundswell, knee high at Campus.
Comments:
The winds built to gales late yesterday and into the evening. They have already backed off today, but are still making conditions very poor.

Again, ideal conditions at Poles, but just not enough swell out there to make it inside. Conditions looked similar at noon and at 3pm. Even drove to Rincon, just for a look. On the way there, Santa Claus Lane took me by surprise... howling offshore! More on that in the next paragraph. So, Rincon had a light easterly onshore breeze and poor conditions, waist-high-at-best mushburgers that looked sectiony and difficult to make judging from how the crowd was handling it.

Heading back north, hit Surf Country on Calle Real for some wax. While he's ringing me up, the guy behind the counter tells me that Depressions turned into offshore A-frame windswell peaks pushing to shoulder high from a sundowner, right around when I was driving through Carp.

"All time," he calls it. "Almost too offshore where the cliffs stopped."
So, you missed it, I missed it, we all missed it. He had it all to himself.

The forecast looks to be pretty grim for the next few days until we get out of this spring-like setup and back into something more winter-typical.

Don't forget, the Rincon Clean Water Classic is this weekend, March 1st and 2nd. Funds donated will benefit a study of the creek and watershed at Rincon to determine pollution sources and possible avenues of dealing with them.

Right now I'm tentatively planning to be there tomorrow and definitely checking it out on Sunday.
