Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

January Overview | 1997 Overview

Date/Time:
Friday, January 3rd, 8:00 am - 11:00 am
Location:
Rincon Point
Weather:
Beautiful rows upon rows of high cottonball clouds that are pulled and stretched into long streaks and then fray into wispy nothingness by noon.
Conditions:
Fair. Morning-sick and lumpy, possibly left over from the storm last night or incoming from the building clearing channel breezes.
Swell:
Shoulder high to overhead sets, inconsistent and fading.
Comments:
Dawn-checked Campus Point with my 6'6" in the car. It looked a little too small for my tastes, with nice looking bowly walls reaching about shoulder high atop the point and smaller at poles, but the rides were too short and crowd too thick.

After some brainstorming, opted for the devil I knew rather than one I didn't. The results were a little disappointing, with the lines being really broken up and the rides shortened by the bump. Got one real screamer early from the indic. to the cove, and mostly hassled the current while waiting for outside sets that were too sporadic and closed out too often.

Hit MaiKai in Goleta for lunch with my parents, both the stir-fry seafood and vegetables over brown rice (mine) and the Oahu burrito (Bettye's, stir-fried vegies wrapped with rice in a tortilla and topped with a sweet curry sauce) were ono. This place is rapidly becoming my favorite post-surf grindage spot.

The sunset tonight was indescribably beautiful, to top it all off.
