Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

January Overview | 1997 Overview

Date/Time:
Thursday, January 9th, 1:00 pm
Location:
Rincon Point
Weather:
Smoggy skies pushed into our area from L.A. and the Oxnard basin by a few straight days of offshores in that area.
Conditions:
Clean, no wind locally. Light onshore flow resuming on the channel.
Swell:
Flat. Nothing.
Comments:
An interesting offshore condition pushed strongly through our area on Monday and faded by Tuesday. It held up in Ventura all the way through yesterday. Unfortunately, the swell has been declining since Saturday. No real swell opportunities have presented themselves. Our best bet on Monday looked to be arriving today, and it hasn't. Phoo.

Spent an hour or so on a low-tide walk along the cobblestone point, checking out the sea anenomes, hermit crabs, limpets, and starfish. The rivermouth is still gushing out a light chocolate-milky-colored water into the lineup. A thin ribbon of sand still makes it possible to jog from the rivermouth past the indicator to Bates Beach, which hasn't been pulled offshore yet this season.

Keep watching those buoys...
