Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

January Overview | 1997 Overview

Date/Time:
Monday, January 27th, 8:00 am - 10:30 am
Location:
Rincon Point
Weather:
Variable winds with grey cloud lines passing under a warm sun.
Conditions:
Super pristine and glassy early, perfect. Blown to junk as we suited up, then slowly improving as noon approached.
Swell:
Big out of the WNW, head high to overhead and a half with sets pushing to double overhead.
Comments:
Overslept this morning. It still looked soooo clean and good coming down the freeway. Light offshores out of the canyon atop the lot and big grinding peaks made for an amping change into a clammy wetsuit still cold from yesterday's Campus Point sesh.

The SE winds hit us in the face as soon as we got 10 yards from the stairs. Noooooo! Stretched and watched as the evil chop developed. Got super lucky on the paddle out, didn't get pounded once while Surfer Bob got beat back to the beach. He was only 10 yards inside me at one point...

The waves were big but almost too choppy to make. Got a few, made the drop only to get slowed going down the line by the chop and left behind. Best wave was the last, a screamer that was slightly cleaner, overhead and a half from the top of the indicator to the inside of the cove (but not the freeway).

Checked a few spots on the way back. Carp looked about waist high while Hammonds had some head high sets. Campus Point looked about as fun as yesterday, waist to shoulder high. A very photogenic day -- should have brought my camera.
