Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

July Overview 1997 Overview

Date/Time: Thursday, July 10th, 7:00 am - 10:00 am
Location: Zeroes / Sequit
Weather: Mostly cloudy and overcast with cool offshores switching to light onshore air.
Conditions: Clean, no chop, but a lot of windswell warble and lump. Fluctuating crowd conditions.
Swell: Small swell from Dolores, 2 ft at 14 s from the south, and a small windswell.
Surf: Thigh to waist high with chest high sets.
Comments: The first over-hyped chubasco swell of the season. Tim' and Surfer Bob and I mobilized for an early dawn patrol; the clincher amidst all the hype was the report of 5' waves with 6' sets at Zuma late yesterday afternoon.

Given that tropical cyclones have maximum swell production coming from their right front quarter as they travel and that Dolores was pointing her right rear quarter at us while moving predominantly westward, it isn't surprising that the various forecasters wound up over-stating the potential for surf. But, like I said, we went anyways.

Checked Zeroes first hoping for low tide greatness but the windswell was making it sectiony and weird. Tim' (a goofyfoot) was bumming. Doubled back to Secos to find similar conditions; paddled out here since Surfer Bob and I are regular and Tim' was making noise about going home. He paddled out anyways, marking his first time out in 6 weeks after thrashing his ACL on the soccer field.

The waves were mushy, warbly, and lumpy, sectioning a lot due to the too-south angle and the low tide. Still had fun since my expectations weren't too high. Tim' had the best of it on an thin 8'3" funboard, picking off a few set waves and also a few guys who were dropping in persistently. Saw Surfer Bob get a bunch of sets later in the day, the larger waves suiting him better since he had succumbed to the hype and brought out a 7'+ board. Once the longboarders cleared out (including Tim'), it left just three shortboarders to own the outside peak for about a half an hour, my first real taste of sitting on some of the outer lineup rocks.

All in all a fun time but not spectacular. Surfer Bob said it best, calling it "underwhelming."
