Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

July Overview 1997 Overview

Date/Time: Wednesday, July 16th, 7:30 am - 11:30 am
Location: Sequit / Secos / Leo Carrillo
Weather: Some tropical high clouds, otherwise sunny, no wind.
Conditions: Pristine glassy perfection. Light to moderate crowding, about 10 people out atop the lineup, more as the day progressed.
Swell: Combination hurricane swell out of the south and southern hemi out of the southwest. Didn't check the buoys today.
Surf: Waist to shoulder high with head high sets.
Comments: Much improved over yesterday with a more reasonable crowd that still hassled for waves with fervor but didn't drop in.

The tides dropped by only 2 feet all morning, just enough by noon to make things a little sucky and bowly but not enough to produce the closeouts that come with a 0 ft to minus low. Plenty waves to go around with enough juice to accept a few cutbacks and a tubey closeout section at the end.

Drove home and immediately regretted it, but managed to get Tim' back out for a sunset sesh. The wind had turned howling side-onshore and the tide was at an astronomical high, with the lineup rock just 1-2 feet shy of being completely buried. Gnarly crowd situation with everyone trying to grab the foamy reforms first as they pushed over the rock and then lined up down the line. Took out the 9'2" and got several waves literally to the sand, jumping off on the steep shore by the lifeguard tower. Tim' got a few great waves early and then mostly got barred by the crowd. I kept him entertained by running over as many people as I could.
