Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

July Overview 1997 Overview

Date/Time: Wednesday, July 30th, 11:30 am - 3:00 pm
Location: Sequit / Secos / Leo Carrillo
Weather: Sunny skies, no clouds but some haze, building sideshore breezes.
Conditions: Good worsening to fair/poor. Low tide at 12:30 pm, mostly shortboarders with loggers filling in as the afternoon wore on.
Swell: New southern hemi swell, 2 ft at 17-20s from due south.
Surf: Around waist high with occasional shoulder high+ sets.
Comments: Again like last week got drawn away from work by a beautiful day after several days of flat surf and gloomy weather. Took the 9'2" down south, hoping to find similar surf to last week, actually got a bit more than I'd hoped for.

Biggest difference was the lower tide, making for some fun bowls coming off the body rock and a great takeoff zone for the sets on the outer lineup reef rocks. Started off mellow and tried not to get in the way of the shortboarders who were occupying the lineup when I paddled out. Eventually they went in as a gaggle of longboarders came out, and the sesh became much more of a hassle. Got my share of waves, including a bunch of sets mainly due to a sense of timing when I should paddle out and sit way outside to wait for one. Long fun walls, accelerating past the body rock and then giving room for hard stomp-on-the-tail cutbacks, then attempt to crossstep forward into the closing section.

Towelled off and watched the traffic, thinking thoughts of the gnarly wreck I saw last week... then up the street a van got rearended by a station wagon and plowed into 3 or 4 parked cars along the highway. If this keeps up, I'm going to start parking in the pay lot!
