Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

July Overview 1997 Overview

Date/Time: Thursday, July 31st, 7:00 am - 10:30 am
Location: Sequit / Secos / Leo Carrillo
Weather: Overcast, clearing by noon, no wind.
Conditions: Excellent, totally glassy on the high tide. Some swash off the rock, of course.
Swell: Holding S. hemi, 2.6 ft at 17 s from due south.
Surf: Waist to chest high with head high sets.
Comments: Pumping sets going wide of the rock and closing everyone out as I watched and stretched out on the beach; saw at least ten waves go unridden. Plenty of room for me!

Most of that ended as I paddled out; some long lulls set in and the crowd slowly began to fill in. Had some adapting to do as I was back on the 6'6" and totally unable to catch waves on the outer reefs that were easy pickings yesterday.

Other than that, the wave was in fine form, fun bowly takeoffs and a super stoked, talkative crowd. Didn't even get much hassling when someone's leash accidentally caught my arm and dragged me under water as they were attempting to negotiate a takeoff.
