Winter wound down to nothing through this month, with no swells that really lit up anywhere south of Pt. Conception. Still got some good surf here and there but it required a lot of patience with misjudgements of potential conditions and missed opportunities. The highlight of the month was World Surf Day 1997, held on 29th and 30th, the first day for which I managed to get some good waves. Most of the other good surfs also came from up north on swells too steeply angled to hit the south coast well.
The lowlight of the month was busting a fin on my 6'6" at Rincon, but even that cloud had a silver lining, forcing me to bring my mini-gun out to search for appropriately bigger conditions when I might otherwise have stayed home and surfed smaller stuff -- I don't surf my 7'2" in shoulder-high waves as a matter of principle.
Out of twelve reports, got good surf four times. Typical waves surfed averaged around shoulder high with a lot of variance (many waist high days and a few days pushing to double overhead). Surfed three times on my longboard and four times on my mini-gun.
