Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

November Overview 1997 Overview

Date/Time: Thursday, November 20th, 9:00 am - 11:00 am
Location: Fairgrounds / Stables
Weather: Clear skies and light offshores turning onshore by noon.
Conditions: Excellent, clean water surface, a little windswelly and peaky.
Swell: Jumped at midnight last night to 17 ft at 17 s. This morning around 15 ft at 15 s. Dropping off quickly to 10 ft at 14 s by the afternoon. 300 degree swell direction, on the cusp of WNW and NW.
Surf: Inconsistent and peaky, drops around shoulder to head high on the sets.
Comments: This is the short-fetch high-intensity pulse that I mentioned at the end of my last report, came on strong overnight and dropped quickly. This will be strictly a half-day swell.

No buoy data worth waking up for as I hit the sack, so overslept a bit and rushed out the door when I heard the word. Light crowds everywhere, and an inconsistent swell. Rincon around knee high and longboardable in the cove. Nobody out at Tropics, Signals, or Pitas, but the waves didn't look too good. Cobblestones was looking fun, and that offshore wind as I entered Ventura had me amping.

Stables had very few people on it and what looked to be a lot of waves. Still hyped up from my last sessions there, suited up quick and hobbled over the mussel-strewn rocks to get out as fast as I could. A crowd of only five. First wave got a little cover-up right on the takeoff that probably didn't obscure me from the beach but sure felt great. Weak, almost nonexistent shoulders and a very windswelly feel to it.

The crowd filled in quickly and the sets seemed to fade with them. Headed in before I got tired, happy with what I got.

Note: The Santa Monica Basin buoy is back online!
