Santa Barbara Surf Report Archive
September 1997 Overview

At first glance this would look like a really down month! Most of the month was spent on a 17-day trip into the heart of Baja, with no reports filed here. Look for the story (tentatively titled "Lost and Found") in the Source.

Of the surfs I did get around here, the pickings were pretty good, predominantly due to Hurricane Nora, which threw a big SE swell up the channel and lit up most of Santa Barbara in ways it hadn't seen since the swell of '72. Backsides at Rincon was the place to be, with double-overhead-plus lefts reeling all the way to the stairs.

Lowlight of the month was a delamination of my beloved 6'6"... it went into the shop for repairs and an order went in to Channel Islands for a replacement, my previous experience being that delaminated sticks never last long.

Only three surf reports were posted for this month, a new record low (beating the 5 reports from April of this year), got good surf three times, the best good-surf ratio ever in the history of the report archive, beating the previous holder (December 1995, 12 good surf days out of 13 reports).
