Headed out early to meet up with some of the Rincon Ryders
doing one of their hardcore predawn patrols. OOP, Da Cape,
and Stimpy were still in the water by the time I paddled to
the top of the point from the remains of the fire pit.
Light crowd, fewer than 10 people, which left plenty waves for everyone. Fast little waves that got hollow and dredgy towards the end of the session, but at the start things were mellow and fun. Worked on cranking my cutbacks as hard as I could on the longboard, but often found myself having to stop midway to recover and then cut back again. Gotta work on that. Still, several rides to the freeway storm drain were had. The strain of yesterday's all day session was showing today, as I kept missing the juiciest and choicest waves, couldn't get outside, spin, and get the 9'2" moving fast enough to catch them. The barbs flew: "you look like you need some Geritol," "I've got some ginseng gum back in my car..." Eventually OOP and Da Cape went in together, and the sacrifice didn't go unrewarded by Huey. Several solid sets rolled through in the next hour, and as the tide dropped the inside section got more hollow and critical. Approached it on the biggest wave of the day atop the nose, and slipped down into the trough thinking I'd pearl. Stuck it out as the curtain dropped over my shoulder and I rushed out into the clear, gooseflesh prickling against the inside of my wetsuit. Didn't have time to hoot as a new section reared up and I took the same approach, this time pearling and getting thumped. That, plus a couple more, were more than enough for me. If you haven't gotten on this one yet, get on it now before it's gone. |
