A great month of summer surf, dominated by two solid swells at the beginning and end, both of which combined the punch of chubascos Estelle and Howard off Baja with longer-period southern hemi influence. In between we had smaller, less consistent waves from Georgette and some weaker south Pacific systems.Highlights of the month were returning to some great waves that I rarely surf. Got Lower Trestles pretty uncrowded and solidly overhead for an entire day, a couple weeks after visiting San Clemente and surfing Uppers and Riviera with the Surfrider crew. At the start of the month I brought SurferBob out to a pseudo-secret spot for some solid waves pushing to overhead and a half, winding, speeding, and tubing.
With all that it was hard to pick a lowlight for the month, surfing-wise. I terribly missed not having Bettye around for most of the month as she went home to visit her family. The waves almost made up for it.
Out of sixteen reports, the most since January of this year, got good surf nine times -- just over half the time. Surfed three times on the longboard and even once on the semi-gun. Average wave height was in the head high range, also exceptionally good for the summer.
