Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

August Overview 1998 Overview

Date/Time: Saturday, August 29th, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Location: C Street
Weather: Muggy and warm. Very light winds making for a nasty stink sitting atop Goleta from Coal Oil Point. Winds building out of the west by afternoon.
Conditions: Fair, some light wind ripples and bits of chop.
Swell: Dying south swell, 3 ft at 11 s.
Surf: Knee to waist high with sets to chest high on the peaks.
Comments: Took the opportunity after my last session to throw the thruster into the shop for some repair work on a small rail crack. Figured today would be an off day or longboardable at best, pretty much right on that count.

First time on the longboard in three weeks and first time surfing C Street in three months. The beach has filled in on the inside quite a bit, with the big sandbars from the winter deposits at the rivermouth having disappeared; likely they've migrated downcoast and the small summer swells have pushed them up onto shore, burying the stairs. Made for a much more pleasant go-out than usual as I didn't have to worry about impaling myself on rusty iron rebar sticking out from "temporary" emergency revetment dumpings.

A nice late morning session, with lots of little mushy waves for everyone at this crowded spot. Water probably in the mid-60's, felt a bit cool but the log kept me high and dry, so I trunked it with a vest/rashguard. My lack of time this month on the log showed as my footwork was a bit out of practice although my backpedaling cutback was still in good form. It's the dreaded slow shuffle to the nose that I need to work on some more.

Had about enough after two hours and was getting hungry besides. Lunch of smoked bratwurst, sauerkraut and french rolls from the Summerland Market. Best sausage in the state. Got some Polish cooling in the freezer for later as well. Looks like I need to hit the water tomorrow to keep the lunch from wrapping itself onto my midsection.
