Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

February Overview 1998 Overview

Date/Time: Wednesday, February 18th, 8:00 am - 11:00 am
Location: Rincon Point
Weather: Sunny with light SE piss wind. Winds shifting to the SW later.
Conditions: Fair to poor, morning-sick and lumpy early on with building SE chop getting progressively worse.
Swell: WNW wind and groundswell, 15 ft at 17 s on outer buoys.
Surf: Overhead to overhead and a half on the peaks of the sets.
Comments: Again early AM winds turning out to be light offshores; a quick check of local Goleta breaks looked optimistic. After getting lost trying to find Tim' moved on to Rincon hoping to find clean, sunny, glassy, classic conditions with a light crowd.

Got the light crowd early on and the sun, but that's it. Morning sick waves that I'd hoped would clean up turned really ugly as the SE piss wind did a real number on it. Not even breaking on the indicator, had to move inside the rivermouth and chase big walled-out frothy pitchy brown waves. Got a few fast ones and got pitched really hard a couple times, and generally struggled with the conditions.

Paddled into the cove after a little while and bumped into Tim', we got a few and exchanged gripes about how junky it was. Got one semi-decent wave to the freeway and called an end to the sesh.
