Santa Barbara Surf Report Archive
May 1998 Overview

We got some good swells this month, with the first solid southern hemi rolling in right under a very late-season strong west swell, right on the first. Reminiscient in size and quality of the big New Year's Day swells back in 1996. Like that swell, I missed this one, this time due to a nasty infection that I might have gotten from surfing Secos during a sewage spill. Recovery took almost two weeks.

The spring winds died back this month, which meant a rapid transition of rubber removal; first the booties (ragging my feet out at Rincon in the process) and then the fullsuit sometime around the end of the month. All that wreaked havoc with my surfing, and switching back and forth from my old board to my new one and back didn't help.

Highlights of the month were a double-session day at Secos at the start of a swell and an unexpectedly good time towards the end of the same swell, same place. Surfed Secos more than anywhere else this month, but conditions, rubber-clad levels, and the lineups chosen changed often enough or were new enough to keep me interested. Got a little variety in on the last day of the month by surfing a new semi-secret spot.

Other than being sick, the lowlight of the month was nearly being stuck without a key outside Surfer Bob's car.

Out of eight reports, got good surf five times. Rode twice on the longboard. Average wave height was in the head high range -- pretty good for late spring!
